Unlike Rachel, Blaine had never really been a morning person. It wasn’t so much that he turned into some sort of grumpy zombie, but he would rather sleep until noon than get up before dawn. Which is why he found himself heading to Jenna’s every morning before his first class, his coffee order ready before he even walked into the shop.
Blaine had found out about Jenna’s when he first moved to New York. It was a small coffee shop that was just a few blocks away from Julliard. The coffee might not have been the town’s greatest but the place had this homey feeling to it, walls stacked up with books, dimmed lighting, comfortable sofa’s scattered around the place with small coffee tables placed between them. Blaine absolutely loved coming there even if it was just to pick up his medium drip. Although he had found out it was a great place to work on his essays and assignments as well.
"Morning, squirt!" Santana's voice came from the back of the shop, once she heard the shop's door open and close, a soft bell ringing as it did.
Blaine laughed, hanging his coat and scarf on the rack next to the door before making his way over to the counter. "I should have never told you about Cooper's nickname for me."
The small shop was still empty as Blaine sat down on one of the bar stools by the counter. To be fair, he had only ever seen a few customers in the shop, and he wasn't sure how the place was still up and running when it couldn't have more than 20 customers a day.
Santana came around from the back, paper coffee cup in her hand. She was wearing a black tightly fitted tunic along with a pair of black heels and a red apron covering her front. If Blaine hadn't been completely gay, his dick would probably be strained against his jeans just from the sight, or so he thought.
"Your ability to look gorgeous no matter what still amazes me, San." Blaine complimented as Santana handed him his coffee.
"Don't be a suck up, Blainers," Santana poured herself a cup of coffee as well before noticing Blaine had taken off his coat. "Don't you have somewhere to go? I don't know, class maybe?" She asked, sitting down on a stool behind the counter.
"Mm, no." Blaine mumbled, swallowing down some of the hot coffee. "I start late. I actually came here to ask you something."
The doorbell went off, notifying that a customer had walked in. Santana shot Blaine a smile, giving him a look to wait and tell his story in a few minutes before she headed over to the young man that had entered, taking his order.
Once Santana had brought the customer his tea and a blueberry muffin, she sat back down with Blaine. "Sorry about that. What did you want to ask me?" She asked, smiling at him.
Paying his attention back to Santana, Blaine smiled. After just a few weeks, the two of them had become really close and despite the fact that he had Rachel, it was nice to have a friend in the big city even when that friend called him the most offensive (but original) nicknames he had ever heard. He knew Santana cared for him, as he did for her.
"My twin sister and I are turning nineteen this Friday. I was wondering if you'd like to come to our party? We'll be having it at our apartment, some of our old friends from Dalton will be there, as well as Cooper. It won't be very big but – "
"I could never turn down an opportunity to meet the infamous Cooper who came up with your lovely nickname, Squirt." Santana laughed, winking at Blaine. "Now go get to class, Mr. Pianist. I have customers to take care off."
Blaine turned his head to find the shop filled with another man, as well as a group of older women. He hadn't even noticed them coming in. "Tell Jenna the coffee was as delicious as always for me, will you?" Blaine said while grabbing his stuff and heading out of the store, not missing Santana's hand gesture saying I'll call you later!
~~~~~~
When Blaine had gotten to his apartment after college, Blaine thought Santana wouldn't call him anymore, until Katy Perry's voice fills the room, the chorus of Last Friday Night blasting out of his phone.
Santana goes on for hours about how much customers the coffee shop had been having that day, and how she was upset that Jenna wasn't there to see it for herself. They talk for a good thirty minutes before Santana points out she has to get on Skype to catch up with her girlfriend. Blaine tells her he'll see her at the party tomorrow before he hangs up and Rachel storms into the apartment, with company.
"David? Jeff? Nick? What – "
Before Blaine is able to finish his sentence, Jeff practically jumps on him, throwing him back onto the couch, hugging the life out of his best friend. Blaine isn't able to see their friends' faces due to the fact that Jeff has him pressed against his chest, blonde hair covering his face, but he can hear their laughter.
"Jeffrey, get off of the poor guy!" A girl's voice fills the room and Blaine pushes Jeff off of him to stare at the girl that just entered the apartment.
"Sorry, fashionably late, as always." The girl giggles, carrying in two bright pink suitcases that match with her pink skirt, white and pink striped sweater and the pink bow in her hair.
Blaine can't get up any faster, hurrying over to the girl before he hugs her tightly. "I missed you, Sugar." He mumbles, holding her in his arms. Sugar had been his best friend back at Dalton. So were Jeff and the others, but Sugar was special.
She was the only person who knew about him, about his sexuality. He hadn't meant for her to find out, though. It happened during Sugar's second year at Dalton, it was Christmas and most of the students were at home spending the holidays with their family. Blaine and Rachel didn't care much for their parents, they'd rather spend time with their friends so they decided to stay at Dalton in their dorms. Sugar's parents on the other hand, they just didn't have time for her. They were so to say, workaholics. Their work paid off though, Sugar was one of the richest students that boarded at Dalton.
On Christmas Eve, Sugar had walked in on Blaine, wanting to give him an early present. She was met with a sobbing Blaine, sitting on his bed. After some comforting from Sugar, Blaine cried out his story to her. He had been keeping it all in after all, and he justneeded to tell someone, anyone. Sugar had promised not to tell anyone, and she held on to that promise.
"Safe the mushy stuff for later, sweetie." Sugar smiles brightly at him as she pulls away from the embrace, gently pushing Blaine towards the rest of their friends.
"How's New York treating you, buddy?" David says, resting a hand on Blaine's shoulder for a split second.
~~~~~~
"Santana, would you calm the fuck down?" Kurt raised his voice at his best friend, staring at her from his spot on the couch.
Santana is sitting on their bed, laptop in front of her. "You don't know if any of what Artie's saying is true, okay?" Kurt continues, and Santana looks away from the laptop to look at Kurt.
"But what if it is? What if – Brittany wouldn't cheat on me, right Kurt?"
Kurt looks at Santana with an unsure look. He knows Brittany loves Santana, but she isn't exactly the brightest spirit and she might not even realize if she'd be cheating on her girlfriend. She thought she was pregnant when there was a birds nest outside of her room for fucks sake.
"I – I don't know, San. You'll have to ask her yourself. Relationships are about being honest with each other, aren't they?" Kurt wasn't sure, he had never been in a relationship before, but he knew he wanted his future boyfriend to be honest with him at all times.
He got up from the couch, moving over to sit with Santana on their bed, wrapping his arms around the girl. Santana instantly leaned in to the touch, resting her head on Kurt's shoulder. "It will be okay." He whispered, trying to soothe her.
The next morning, Santana is up early as usual, heading over to work. Kurt doesn't seem to be able to sleep in that day though, so he decides to head out for breakfast with Rachel. Standing in front of the small dresser in their apartment, Kurt sighs. "This closet does not do my clothes justice." He mumbles to himself as he grabs a pair of very tight dark jeans, a dotted Marc Jacobs button up, his military camouflaged blazer and a hippopotamus brooch.
"You're late."
Kurt raises an eyebrow at Rachel once he sits down with her at the small breakfast place. A waitress comes over and he orders a cup of coffee as well as a bagel.
"I can't decide whether I want a disco ball at the party or not." Rachel says, mostly to herself as she reads through the papers in front of her.
"Oh my god! I totally forgot!"
Kurt jumps up from his seat, hurrying over to Rachel on the opposite side of the table, kissing her cheek before hugging her small posture. "Happy birthday sweetheart!"
Rachel laughs, beaming at Kurt as he pulls back from the embrace and goes to sit back on his spot again. Kurt hadn't meant to forget, but he had been having a lot on his mind due to NYADA lately. He couldn't wait to get to Rachel's party that night, to finally blow off some steam.
" – My friends can't wait to meet you, they arrived yesterday! I'm sure Cooper will arrive late, as usual, maybe even when the party has already begun – Do you think we should get wine coolers?"
"Rachel, calm down."
"I'm sorry, I'm just so excited! And it's not like my brother has been organizing anything at all, he counts on me to do it, I always do."
"Talking about him, what's he like?" Kurt smirked, nudging Rachel's knee with his.
"Oh, he's a sweetheart! I feel like he's been really lonely ever since we got to New York. He loves going to Julliard, and he has me, but I just feel like there's something missing in his life, you know? – Maybe I should set him up with a date. I doubt that will happen, I can't even get a hold of a cute girl myself, let alone my brother."
As Rachel continued to talk about her family as well as preparations for the party, Kurt zoned out a bit. Rachel wasn't the only one who had been hoping for some romance in the big city. No luck so far in that department for him either. It had all been too good to be true in his mind when he still lived in Ohio. He figured that once he moved to New York, everything would be better. For a big part it was, he had gotten into the college of his dreams and was living in the greatest city of all, but he had hoped that once he stepped off that plane, guys would lining up to date him. Sort of.
Maybe he would meet a cute gay guy at the party, he hoped.
