Author's Notes:

Again, please let me know your opinions on this so that I know if I should continue writing it or not!

When Kurt was eight, he lost his mother to an unfortunate illness. Soon after, the little boy began to stop talking. He would go day by day not speaking to anyone about anything. Kurts mother was his entire world as a child and he wasnt sure how to function properly without her. It wasnt a bad thing, from Kurts point of view, that he stopped speaking. Everyone made fun of his voice and the fact that he liked to sing anyway, so he was really doing everyone a favour by not speaking.

As Kurt grew older, he continued his silence and it was sort of as if he had forgotten how to speak. Kurts father, Burt, had taken Kurt to the doctors several times just to be sure that he could speak and was just choosing not to. This theory was proven each and every time — Burt was also told each time that Kurt had probably stopped speaking because he lost his mother — but Burt didnt understand why Kurt still wasnt speaking eight years down to the line when it was evident that his mothers death didnt hurt Kurt as much as it had before.

Now Kurt was sixteen, he still had his dad but he also had a step mother, Carole, and a step brother named Finn. Burt was surprised at how easily Kurt had adjusted to his new family members, and he was also fairly shocked at how easily his wife and her son had accepted and gotten used to Kurts silence. They had both grown used to how Kurt would communicate to people via his body language and written notes. Carole fully understood why Kurt had become mute and although Finn didnt really understand it that well — he had lost his father when he was young and had grieved and moved on — he still supported and defended his brother against anyone that had a single bad word to say about him.

Going to McKinley wasnt the easiest task for Kurt. His father had to personally explain to all of his teacher that Kurt didnt speak and why he didnt speak and despite most of the teachers being understanding of Kurts condition, the student body seemed to see the kid who didnt speak as an easy target for bullying. Nonetheless, Kurt survived second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour and day by day. Kurt didnt tell anybody about the bullying — obviously, he couldnt — he just suffered in silence, the same way he dealt with everything that approached him in life.

When a new student named Blaine Anderson transferred to McKinley, Kurt wanted to speak more than ever but he found it more difficult than ever before. The new kid was admittedly cute. He had glimmering hazel eyes that looked like pools of honey, he had black hair that was coated in far too much gel and he seemed to always wear jeans, polo shirts, cardigans and bowties. He was in Glee Club and sang like a dream. Kurt wasnt sure how he, himself, had ended up in Glee Club. Hed never spoken, let alone sung but somehow he found himself sitting in the back of the choir room each and every day after school. Of course he didnt sing, he just learned all of the choreography and made sure that he stuck to the background.

Blaine, on the other hand, deserved each and every solo that ever exsisted. Okay, it was safe to say that Kurt had a little bit of a crush on Blaine Anderson. Kurt happened to sit next to Blaine in English which was sort of okay as Blaine had evidently realised that Kurt wasnt going to speak. The other teen was still polite enough to Kurt and he wanted nothing more than to become friends with Blaine, but unless he was willing to put up with written notes from Kurt, that was never ever going to happen.

Apparently Kurt was wrong when he thought that was Blaine approached him after English one day.

"Hey, Kurt?" Blaine called, following Kurt to his locker as the chestnut haired teen turned to face him. "So I was wondering if you wanted to do the English project together? I know that you dont speak and you usually work on paired projects by yourself but I honestly dont mind reading notes or whatever to communicate with you and it would probably be easier to tackle this as a pair and..." Blaine trailed off, noticing the amused expression on Kurts face. "Im rambling arent I?"

Kurt nodded as he released a tiny, barely audibly giggle before biting his lip in shock. He hadnt laughed for giggled since he lost his mother, he hadnt even made the tiniest sound since he was eight and he wasnt sure how he was supposed to react to accidentally making his first sound in eight years.

"Sorry," Blaine said awkwardly with a blush, noticing how Kurts expression changed quickly from amused to shocked and trying to distract him from thinking too much about it. "So um, do you wanna work together?"

Kurt considered it for a few moments before nodding shyly.

"Great!" Blaine exclaimed excitedly, happiness reappearing on his face. "So do you wanna work on it after school?" Another nod from Kurt. "Okay um, do you mind giving me your number so I can text you my address?"

Kurt took Blaines phone and entered his number before handing it back to the hazel eyed teen. His phone buzzed a few moments later showing a text with Blaines name and address, so he saved his name while smiling shyly at Blaine.

The day seemed to last forever for Kurt. He was both nervous and excited to go to Blaines house. Hed never interacted with the other teen and even though he obviously had feelings from him, he was really nervous about actually spending time with him.

When Kurt and Blaine finally arrived at the Anderson household, Kurt followed the other teen inside, declining his invitation for something to eat or drink before following up to his bedroom.

After an hour of working on their project Blaine started to become restless and handed Kurt a whiteboard and pen, initating a conversation which made Kurt feel like a little nervous.

Blaine seemed to notice this, however, as the next thing he said we, "Dont worry. I wont ask you about your speech if you dont want me to."

Kurt let out a breath before scribbling across the board: Thank you. Its not that I dont trust you Ive just never told anyone anything about my speech before and I dont really know how to.

"Its okay...So, quick fire questions!" Blaine exclaimed all of a sudden. "Whats your favourite colour?"

Kurt quickly scribbled What!? on the whiteboard before showing Blaine and shooting him a confused look.

"Quick. Fire. Questions!" Blaine said slowly with a laugh. "Now answer the question!"

Kurt shook his head with silent laughter before writing his answer on the whiteboard and showing it to Blaine: Blue.

"Favourite movie?" Blaine asked next.

Blaine was sort of surprised at the fact that Kurt didnt even have to think about it before he wrote Moulin Rouge across the whiteboard and showed it to Blaine.

They continued playing the game for a while — Blaine giving Kurt his own answers to the questions once Kurt had written his own down — but it started to become difficult for Kurt to write his answers quickly when Blaine started timing him and eventually Blaine couldnt even understand Kurts handwriting. The two boys just ended up in a fit of laugher, the game long forgotten as they tried to control their laughed.

"Okay, okay," Blaine breathed through his laughter. "I think that game is over now."

Kurt smiled at Blaine as his laughter died down, receiving a strange look from the other teen. Kurt picked up his whiteboard and wrote one simple phrase across it: Thank you.

"For what?" Blaine asked confusedly, not having the faintest idea why Kurt was thanking him.

A mixture of things really... Kurt wrote across the whiteboard before showing Blaine.

"Please elaborate," Blaine said with a small laugh. "Im really confused."

Kurt wiped the board clean before writing something across it as Blaine continued to look at him with a confused expression, not knowing why Kurt was taking so long to write his message.

1. Ive never really had any friends before, except my step brother but I dont think that counts...

2. I havent laughed, or made any noise at all, since I was eight.

3. Nobody has ever been willing to be my partner on a project which is understandable because I dont speak and they have no idea how to communicate with me but still...

4. This was kind of the most fun Ive had in a really, really long time.

Blaine smiled sadly as he read the message, not understanding why nobody was willing to get to know the awesomeness that was Kurt Hummel.

"Well...that sucks. And its also their loss because youre pretty cool," Blaine began as Kurt blushed and ducked his head slightly, eliciting a small laugh from Blaine. "But youre welcome. I had fun too, even while we were doing the project if Im being totally honest."

Kurt picked up the whiteboard once again and wrote another message on it: I should probably get going. My dad will probably start worrying about me.

"Okay," Blaine sighed dramatically with a pout, causing Kurt to let out another one of his adorable giggles that Blaine was already starting to become obsessed with hearing. "Am I allowed to text you?"

Even though Kurt wasnt entirely sure why anyone, and Blaine Anderson of all people, would try to become friends with him but he wiped the whiteboard before writing a simple word on it: Yes.
