“We got approved.”

Rachel looked up from where she was sprawled on the white carpet, tying a bow around a meticulously wrapped Christmas present.

“What?” she replied, mouth slightly agape at her brother and her best friend as they stood in front of her.

“We got approved. It’s happening.” Blaine repeated, grinning from ear to ear.

Rachel couldn’t process what they were saying to her. Kurt watched her with an amused grin on his face. Even after 3 years of officially being Rachel’s brother-in-law, he still couldn’t believe her over the top reactions sometimes.

“You...” she stumbled over her words in a way that was highly unusual for the extremely loquacious young woman.

“You got approved for the adoption? You’re going to be parents?” She flailed her hands dramatically and threw the pieces of ribbon she had been holding across the room.

“We’re going to be parents.” Blaine replied, clasping Kurt’s hand in his and nuzzling his husband affectionately.

“So that means that I’m going to be an auntie!” At this realization, Rachel sprung up from her place on the carpet and in the process, knocked right into the Christmas tree behind her.

The force of her enthusiastic jump sent the big tree shaking on its tree stand and ornaments started to rattle and fall off all around her.

Catching her foot on a present on the floor as she tried to steady herself, she fell backwards into the tree sending pine needles flying and ornaments tumbling to the ground.

Kurt and Blaine watched in slow motion horror as their painstakingly decorated Christmas tree came crashing to the ground, amidst the sounds of breaking glass and crashing.

All three were silent with shock for a moment, surveying the catastrophe that Rachel had caused. Kurt was about to yell angrily at Rachel for the disaster she had made of his beautiful tree until he actually took a good look at her.

Rachel was sitting in a heap on the floor, amidst a pile of needles and tree braches, tangled in a string of lights and garland.

Kurt couldn’t help it. He burst out laughing.

“You look like you just tried to fight the tree and lost very badly.” He gasped through his laughter.

Soon all three were howling with laughter at the ridiculousness of the situation.

Once they had calmed down a little, Kurt headed to the kitchen to get a broom, and Blaine sat down beside Rachel to try and untangle her from the string of lights.

“You know sis,” he began, “After that little display, I don’t know if I feel comfortable letting you babysit our child...” he teased, poking her in the side.

“Hey! That’s not fair! I was just excited.” She whined at her brother.

Blaine laughed. “Leave it to your enthusiasm to bring down a whole tree. Thank god we weren’t in a forest. Who would have known what might have happened.”

“But seriously Blaine, that’s amazing news.”

“Yeah. I know. It feels like the last piece of the puzzle you know? Like our little family will finally be complete. Me, Kurt and our baby.”

“That doesn’t sound complete to me.” Rachel replied.

Blaine looked at her quizzically.

“You can’t forget about Auntie Rachel.”
