Blaine returned to the living room to find his petite husband resting against the window sill, round hip popped to the side. He looked like an angel, with the golden sun glowing around his white form. A sheer dress draped loosely over him, long strips of fabrics hanging over his chest and waist. Blaines mouth watered as he stared at Kurts long legs, which he could see clearly through the transparent fabric. Suddenly, Kurt held a hand up to his smiling mouth to quiet a snicker, his eyes gleaming. Wondering what had him so amused, Blaine set the basket of laundry down, and he stalked quietly over to him. Trapping him in his arms, Blaine heard him inhale sharply, before a light hand came to the side of his head. "Whats so funny?" He muttered, nibbling Kurts ear.
"Them." Kurt nodded at Blaines car, which was veering to the left on the blacktop of the driveway. "Archer is teaching poor Hunter how to drive. It isnt going well." Blaine followed Kurts gaze to the two who were sitting in the front seats. Hunter gripped the steering wheel with both hands, while Archer kept a hand on top of one of Hunters, guiding it. The car abruptly jolted backward, making Archer smack the back of his seat. He made a surprised face before he started squabbling at Hunter, who impatiently drummed his fingers on the wheel. Exhausted of Archers complaining, Hunter stuck his tongue out and licked Archers cheek.
His husbands shoulders shook as he laughed, while Blaine frowned deeply. "If they dent my car, Im strangling both of them." He turned away from the scene and picked up a jacket from the top of the pile. He instantly knew it was Hunters from the ink stain that had seeped into the pocket. "Hunter really has to stop wearing this thing. Ive told him that we can afford to buy him new clothes."
Kurt twisted around, his dress dragging across the floor as he came to Blaines side. He kissed his husbands dry mouth, clasping his head in his hands. "Blaine." He murmured, and Blaine flicked his golden eyes up to his expressionless face. Kurt was so beautiful, with his head tilted like that and one strap of his dress falling down his shoulder. "I should have believed your intuition about Hunter. All of the signs were there, but I didnt want to see them. It makes me sad to think that hes been with Karofsky for all this time."
"The past is in the past." Blaine promised, "No one is to blame, sweetheart. I was stupid to trust Santanas word. But now Hunter is home, and hes healthy and happy. Thats more than we could have asked for when we thought he was dead."
Kurt creased his lips downward, "I still feel like something is missing... that we need some kind of closure. Karofsky is dead, but Hunters memory of him isnt." He glimpsed out the window, the light hitting his pale cheek. "Do you think that he and Archer will be okay, Blaine?"
Blaine nodded slowly, "I do, Kurt. I think that, with time, Hunter will adapt to living with a real family. He and Archer are hardy people. Theyre stubborn to a fault, and very passionate. They have a lot to learn from each other. I think theyll settle very easily into a married life."
Smiling, Kurt bunched up handfuls of his dress, "Ive never seen Archer so lively before. I think Hunter is bringing him out of his shell. He has all of these new desires. Its very fascinating to watch them grow together. I want them to love each other the way that we do."
Blaine motioned for his husband to come closer, and he grinned at the small squeak that he let out when he wound his arms around him and drew him against his chest. "This dress is beautiful, Kurt. Lets go upstairs before I become too impatient and tear it in half right here."
Kurt squirmed, "Oh, Blaine, theres laundry to be done! And dishes to be washed. I have to dust the curtains off. Theres dinner to be made."
Scowling, Blaine tugged on his fragile hand, "The laundry can wait. Its more patient than I am."
"We were together last night."
"And now you must be sore. Let me soothe you."
Kurt laughed, flinging his head back, "Archer got his stubbornness from you! Its the middle of the day, Blaine." He tried to pull away, but his husbands strength outmatched his. It wasnt like he was trying too fervently to get away, anyway.
"So it is." Blaine glanced over his shoulder at the streaks of light that melted over Kurts slender form as he followed him upstairs. Seeing his face turned down, Kurt released small giggle at his enthused expression, and let him sweep him into their bedroom.
At dinner, Hunter sat beside of his fiancé, plating for himself. It was a small task for anyone else, but Hunter felt proud as he scooped up a warm roll and set it next to his potatoes. When he raised his head, Archer was smiling sweetly at him, blue eyes twinkling. He understood exactly how Hunter was feeling. Pushing his black rimmed glasses farther up his nose, Hunter listened to his family members talking easily with each other. Kurt and Blaine snuggled into each others sides, while Keegan sat alone, munching on his food. The last three months had been good to them. Suddenly, Hunter imagined what it would be like to have his own dinner table, and to feed himself small bites in between wiping his childrens mouths. Hunter hoped that Archer would want to have babies with him. He looked forward to a quiet, peaceful life, with no more screaming or crying.
Licking butter off of his bottom lip, Hunter brought up a topic he had wanted to leave alone, but had been bothered by since his dads death. "Blaine? Kurt?" He muttered, drawing in their wide eyed attention. "Theres been something on my mind. And I wont do it... if you feel that it wont be good for me, but I want to talk to the woman who gave me up to Karofsky. I want to know about my birth mom. I want... to understand."
Blaine and Kurt shared a look that spoke volumes, and then Blaine turned back to Hunter, who Archer had laid his hand on. "Are you sure thats what you want? Your birth mom had very little to do with you. The information might not mean anything."
Hunter nodded, "This is what I want. Will you take me to see her? I dont want to be alone when I face her."
Kurts lips parted as his eyes glazed with tears. He pushed away the table, coming around to Hunter and wrapping his arms around his neck. "Youll never be without us again, Hunter."
Hunter held Archers hand tightly, feeling his short fingers rub circles into his thigh, on the drive to Elida. He stared out the window at the passing fields, with corn stalks higher than his head. Elida seemed to be one, long continuous road, surrounded by miles of farm land. Every so often, a tractor would rumble by, grains shaking inside of the container attached to its back. While a glamorous person like Kurt looked out of place here, this was the scenery that Hunter had grown up around, and was comfortable with. He didnt want any more major changes, like a move to Paris, to uproot him from his life. When the car rolled down a narrow, gravel road with only three houses on the right side, Hunter realized that this was it. He reminded himself that whatever he found out, if Santana would even welcome him inside, wouldnt change anything. What had happened was over with, and all that mattered was that he was home now. Nothing was going to take him away from his family again.
Unsure of why this was so important to him, Hunter felt the car stop in front of a single level bungalow, with a weeded lawn bordering it. As he climbed from the car, he heard Kurt breathe, "Poor Santana." Despite the harm that she had caused their family, each of them were still feeling creatures toward her, and pitied her situation. Walking in front of his family, Hunter followed the pebbles that led up to the moldy porch, head slightly bowed in a sign of respect for his dead mom. Archer trailed after him, eyes also cast to the ground.
Reaching the door, Hunter rapped his knuckles against it. As he waited for an answer, he squinted his eyes at the numbers next to the door to make sure he had the right house. Turning his head when his small fiancé touched his sleeve, Hunter gave him an encouraging pat on his shoulder before he heard feet shuffling from within the house. The door cracked open, fumigating the air with the odor of cigarettes. An ashy woman appeared, her once bronzed skin now grayish. Heavy bags dragged her dark eyes down. Her thick hair was tangled and unkempt. Sucking a dry lip between her teeth, she said, "Can I help you?"
Hunter stared at her, "Yes. Im here... to ask you about my mom. My name is Hunter Aoibhe-Beauchene. Are you Santana Lopez?"
The woman suddenly parted the door wider, and she gazed at Blaine and Kurt, who both nodded their heads at her. "Blaine." She whispered more to herself than she did to anyone else. Flitting her eyes back to Hunter, she made a weak noise, her hand raising to her mouth. "Hunter... you survived."
Hunter nodded, "And Im well. Can we come in?"
She briskly stepped back, letting them into her home. The years had worn down her snappy remarks, for she had nothing to say as they stepped through the door. Kurt was the only one to pause in front of her, and he opened his mouth to say something, and then thought better of it. His husband drew him away, and they seated themselves at various couches, eyes blank as they searched the room. Blaine noticed pictures hanging from the walls of a redheaded girl with a large smile. Santana followed his gaze, and her face became very solemn. "Her name was Tiffany. I met her two months after Brittanys death. Three years ago, she overdosed."
Kurt covered his mouth with his hand as he silently shook his head. Seeing that there was no more talk to be made, Hunter shifted to the edge of his seat, "Santana... you were the woman who took me to Karofsky?" Santana shook her head up and down. Hunter pushed his lips to the side of his face. "Why did you do it?"
A single tear streaked down Santanas face, "He threatened me. He was going to kill Brittany if I didnt. It wouldnt have made a difference, anyway. When I got home, she was already dead."
Hunter shut his eyes, thinking that a few extra minutes could have saved his life. When he opened them, they were glassy, "And you didnt come back for me?"
"He told me you were dead." She shrugged, "I could have tried harder, but the only meaning to my life was gone. What happened to you didnt matter to me." Blaine made a gruff sound at that, wiping the tears that had leaked down his face.
Hunter swallowed, watching Kurt wipe at his husbands watery face, "Did my mom love me?"
Santana sadly shook her head, "She had no awareness of you. She got sick, Hunter. By the time you were born, she was already gone. She died not knowing who she was." Suddenly rising, Santana went over to a small table and pulled out the drawer. "Do you want to have a picture of her? Its what I owe you." She brought a picture frame over to Hunter, who frowned at his first sight of his mom. "You dont look like her."
"I dont know if I look like my dad, either. I dont remember his face. One day, I might get up the courage to see a picture of him." Even though Santana didnt understand what he meant, she nodded, anyway, returning to her seat. "My dad is dead, Santana."
Santana squeezed her eyes shut, the lids wrinkling over large tears that spilled from between them, "Im so sorry, Hunter. I ruined your life because of my selfishness."
Hunter shook his head, sliding his arm around Archer, "Its not ruined. I have a beautiful, loving family now. I appreciate them all the more after what Ive been through. I regret not being with them, but... I dont entirely resent spending all that time with my birth dad. He taught me a lot of lessons about the world, and sometimes he could be a good man. Some part of me will always love him. I miss him already. I wish he could have always been the man I saw on those certain days when he didnt drink as much." As Santana lowered her eyes, Hunter laid the picture back on the couch, "I dont want to take this with me. This belongs with you. I dont need my biological parents. Im ready to move on. I forgive you, Santana. Dont spend your life being upset. Youre a lovely woman, and I know that my mom wouldnt want you to grieve forever."
Santana looked up at him, beads shining in the corners of her eyes, "Youre like Kurt and Blaine, Hunter. Youre a good person." She turned toward the married couple, who were wrapped around each other. "He held onto the upbringing that you two raised him with." Her eyes suddenly darkened, and she lowered them to the ground, "I dont want you to come back here. I want you to forget about whats been done. Leave me be, and focus on better things."
For a few seconds, the air was pregnant with silence, and then Hunter stood. He pulled a slip of paper from his pocket and held it out to Santana. "Before the house was demolished, I was allowed to go through it and salvage what was left from the fire." At the strange look she gave him, he only shook his head, "Its a long story. There was almost nothing left, but I sold off the furniture that was dug up. This is the money I got for all of it. Its not much, but it felt wrong for me to spend it. This was the stuff my dad had used when he was living. I couldnt... I couldnt use the money for myself. My dad meant more to me than that. But I want you to take it."
Santana took the check from him, reading that it was worth nearly three hundred dollars. "Are you sure that you really want me to have this?"
Hunter folded her fingers around the crinkling paper, "No one is a mistake, Santana. People just make mistakes. They only become bad people if they dont apologize."
Santanas lips wavered with a weepy smile, "You dont know what this is going to do for me. I really needed some money. Thank you, Hunter."
Hunter grinned down at her, feeling his fiancé slink behind him and wind his arms around his neck. "Remember my mom, Santana. I dont know anything about her, so youll have to think of her for me." Hunter spun around to his family members, who stood, knowing that it was time for them to leave, when he thought of one more thing to say. "Santana... dont hate my dad. I know that he was the reason my mom died, but he wasnt really a bad guy. I think he was misunderstood. He was really lonely. He didnt have any family members to be there for him... besides me, and he had to force me to come to him. Let him be peaceful now. Its all that he has."
