Miracles do not, in fact, break the laws of nature.
-C.S. Lewis

Weeks pass. Spring arrives and with it comes a warm breeze and the dawning of Ohio’s glorious wildflowers. Their field looks prettier than ever and the cross around Blaine’s neck glitters in the sunlight.

It’s so calm out here, Kurt thinks.

Everything is calm. Everything is right. Kurt feels as if he’s exactly where he’s supposed to be in life. He glances over at Blaine, who’s thumbing through his Bible, attempting to pen down a few notes for the Bible study he’ll have with his mother later that evening. His eyebrows are furrowed in concentration and the wind whispers through the tall blades of grass. Kurt smiles.

Last year, he would have glared at the sight of a Bible, thick and full of fairy tales that were the root of hatred. He would have scoffed at any Christian. He would have rolled his eyes at the sight of a cross.

Blaine Anderson has changed him. There’s no denying that.

Kurt knows he’ll never believe in God. He’ll never believe in a divine power, an omniscient being that keeps an eye on every human on this planet.

But maybe he believes a bit more in fate. Maybe he feels like he’s here for a purpose and maybe – just maybe – that purpose is Blaine.

“What’re you staring at?”

Blaine’s voice pulls him out of his thoughts.

“You,” Kurt says simply, brushing a finger over the shell of Blaine’s ear.

Blushing, Blaine sets aside his Bible and turns over on the blanket to face his boyfriend.

“Whatever for?” Blaine asks, feigning innocence.

“I think you were right,” Kurt says. “When you said that miracles happen all the time.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah,” Kurt nods.

“And what would you consider a miracle?”

“You,” Kurt says softly. “Just you being here with me, in my life, by my side.”

Blaine stares at Kurt with large, sparkling eyes. His breathing becomes shallow and he reaches out a gentle hand to touch Kurt’s cheek.

“Kiss me,” Blaine whispers.

And Kurt can’t deny the small order. Without a second thought, he moves closer to Blaine on the blanket and their lips meet, soft and sweet, without a sound. They’ve kissed on this blanket in this field many times now but this specific kiss seems to mean something more. Here and now, it’s like the simple action echoes their state of mind, the state of their souls; there are these invisible strands of light between them that have suddenly fused at the ends, connecting the boys to one another.

“Closer,” Blaine breathes.

Kurt complies, shuffling over until their bodies are as flush as possible. Their hands trapped between their bellies clasp on instinct and their other arms twine around one another. They kiss slowly, languidly, neither caring if they were to lose all breath and drown in the other.

The ground is too hard below them, despite their trusty blanket, and the sun is setting which means they’ll need to head back soon.

Kurt thinks he’s never been happier.

Or more in love.

“You’re sure you can’t stay for dinner?” Kurt asks a little while later when he and Blaine are standing on his front porch.

Blaine teases him with a smile and a shake of his head. “I had dinner here last night,” he reminds. “I’ve got to go home and eat.”

Kurt sighs but he nods anyway. “I know. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“I’ll text you when I’m done with Bible study,” Blaine assures, taking hold of Kurt hands and stepping closer.

“Okay.”

“Don’t I get a kiss goodbye?” Blaine wonders with a waggle of his eyebrows.

Snorting, Kurt smiles and rolls his eyes.

“I suppose,” he says as Blaine wraps his arms around Kurt’s waist, pulling them together.

“Oh, you suppose,” Blaine whispers, leaning his forehead against Kurt’s. “Are you tired of kissing me already?”

Kurt giggles and rubs their noses together.

Is this what flirting is supposed to be like? If so, Kurt can die a happy man.

“No,” Kurt answers. “Not yet.”

“You’re a brat,” Blaine says with a smile on his lips.

The sun has died for the day but the porch light burns bright overhead. The street is quiet. All of the other families nearby have retired inside for dinner and there’s no one around to see them share a quick, private kiss. This is the first time Blaine has ever suggested they kiss on Kurt’s front porch.

It’s progress.

Their lips meet.

The front door bangs open.

Burt Hummel stands frozen, face expressionless, eyes darting between the two boys on his doorstep.

They had failed in disentangling themselves from one another in time to avoid getting caught. Blaine finally takes a step away, arms winding around his stomach as if he might be sick. Kurt opens his mouth to speak but nothing comes out.

“Well, I was gonna run out and grab something for dinner from the store,” Burt says, “but I guess we’ll be ordering in tonight. The main course will be an explanation with a healthy side dish of what the hell.”

“D-Dad,” Kurt croaks out.

“In you get,” Burt says, stepping aside.

A quick glance at Blaine reveals his boyfriend’s obvious distress, but he follows Kurt inside the house. Burt closes the door behind them.

“Dad, Blaine has to get home for dinner,” Kurt says quickly, willing to spare Blaine from this interrogation.

“I’ve got quite a mind to tell Blaine’s parents about you two making out on my front porch,” Burt says evenly. “Considering you’ve been lying to me all this time, sayin’ you two were just friends.”

“Please don’t!” Blaine blurts out.

“You can’t do that,” Kurt begs. “Please, dad, please don’t say anything to them.”

“I don’t see why I shouldn’t,” Burt says. “They have a right to know who their son’s dating.”

Blaine squeezes his eyes shut and whimpers, completely distraught at Kurt’s side.

“It’s okay,” Kurt says, wrapping an arm around Blaine’s shoulders. “It’s going to be okay, I promise.”

“Calm down, kid,” Burt says, finally taking notice of Blaine’s distress. “I’m not gonna like, shoot you.”

“P-please don’t tell them, Mr. Hummel,” Blaine pleads. “Please don’t tell them.”

Burt stares wordlessly at Blaine, taking in his trembling hands and the tears beginning to cascade down his face.

“There are parts of this story I’m missing,” Burt declares.

“Blaine’s parents don’t know,” Kurt says.

“Obviously.”

“No, I mean they don’t know about him – about him being with another boy,” Kurt clarifies.

Eyebrows nearly disappearing into his hairline, Burt looks to be piecing the puzzle pieces together in his head.

“I see,” he finally says. “Well…in that case, you know, I won’t mention it to them. But,” he adds quickly, “you two gotta know that I’m not cool with you kids dating behind our backs.”

Kurt nods. He can understand that.

“Can – can Blaine go home? He has to be home in time for dinner,” Kurt explains. “Just let me walk him to his car.”

Burt opens the door and Kurt leads Blaine out of the house and down the porch steps to his car.

“Kurt,” Blaine sobs.

“It’s okay,” Kurt reassures him. “My dad won’t say anything. I promise.”

“What if he tells someone else and then that person tells someone else and-”

“He won’t,” Kurt says firmly. “I’m going to have to explain everything to him, though. But he won’t tell. He doesn’t believe in outing people.”

“What if he doesn’t let me see you anymore?”

“That’s stupid. After I explain, he’ll understand everything. He won’t keep us from each other, Blaine. He won’t.”

“But-”

“Hush,” Kurt says soothingly, holding Blaine in his arms. He rubs comforting circles on Blaine’s back, attempting to calm him down because he knows he can’t let him drive back home in this state. “Everything is going to be just fine. We’ll be okay.”

After a few minutes, Blaine’s tears subside and he nods against Kurt’s shoulder.

“Go eat dinner with your family,” Kurt urges. “Text me when you’re done with Bible study. Don’t worry about this.”

“I love you,” Blaine whispers.

“I love you, too. I’ll talk to you later. Just - just trust me,” Kurt says, opening the car door.

When Blaine finally leaves and his car turns at the end of the street, Kurt heads back inside.

“Dad?” he calls out nervously.

“In the living room,” Burt answers.

Kurt takes far longer than necessary to walk to the living room. It’s silly, really. After he explains everything, his dad will completely understand.

Right?

“I ordered Chinese for dinner,” Burt says.

Nodding, Kurt takes a seat on the sofa, facing his father’s recliner.

“So,” Burt says, clearing his throat. “Guess we need to talk about this.”

“I guess so.”

“How long have you two been...together?”

“It’s – it’s complicated,” Kurt replies.

“Really? I figured that was the simplest question I could start with.”

“In another case, maybe. But Blaine’s…it’s different with Blaine.”

“Okay. Just start from the beginning.”

Kurt takes a deep, steadying breath.

“When I met Blaine, he had never even met another gay guy in his life. He and his family are Baptists, like, hardcore Baptists. I told you that. He was always taught that being gay was a choice and he was taught that it was a sin and it was wrong. So when he found out I was gay, he had a lot of questions. For a while, he struggled with just trying to accept the fact that being gay was okay. He went and talked to a counselor, he had some Jewish dinner with Rachel and her dads and he talked to me a lot. I thought he was just trying to understand everything so he could, you know, keep being my friend. Just – just after Christmas, though, he admitted to wanting to be with me. He said he didn’t understand why, he didn’t understand how, but he knew that he loved me,” Kurt details.

“And…I’m assuming you love him,” Burt states.

“Yeah,” Kurt admits, hanging his head. “I do.”

“So you’ve been together since Christmas, then?”

“Well…before that, we – I mean – we had kissed. Spur of the moment things. So like, we knew there was some kind of attraction. But you have no idea how confused he was, dad. I mean, just…it was really bad. He was so quiet and he looked miserable all the time, like he’d been crying for days. I knew he wasn’t completely okay with the idea of being attracted to another boy so I never pushed him. We never talked about the few times we kissed, we never talked about our feelings for each other. Eventually, though, I guess time was on our side. After Christmas, he admitted to loving me and after that…we just took things very, very slow. We held hands and went for coffee a lot. We never even kissed again until that night that he came over here and you met him.”

“Well,” Burt says gruffly, “at least you’re being responsible.”

“It’s not just about responsibility,” Kurt continues. “We don’t hold hands in public. We don’t act like a couple unless we’re alone. Nobody else knows, dad. No one at school knows. His parents don’t know. He was initially very scared to meet you because he thought you’d ask questions he wouldn’t know how to answer.”

“But all I knew was that you guys were friends.”

“Yeah, but he was terrified you’d have some kind of sixth sense and figure it all out. You saw how he acted when you walked out and caught us kissing. That’s like, the most public place we’ve been where he actually wanted to show affection.”

“Well it seems like you two are pretty solid, if you can handle all of that on your own. Don’t you think maybe it’s time he-”

“It doesn’t matter what I think,” Kurt says, shaking his head. “Blaine is comfortable with me because I was there every step of the way. He’s comfortable with me because he loves me and he knows I’ll accept him no matter what. But his parents aren’t like that. He told me once that his mom equated homosexuals with murderers.”

A dark look settles on Burt’s face. “Parents are supposed to love their kids no matter what. Christian or Muslim or Buddhist or whatever, they’re supposed to love their kids.”

“Well Blaine doesn’t know if that will hold true if his parents find out. They could kick him out, dad. He just doesn’t know. He doesn’t want to risk being ejected from his family. When he’s ready to tell them he’s with me, then he’s ready.”

“When he’s ready to tell them that he’s gay, you mean.”

“No,” Kurt says firmly. “Because that has nothing to do with it. Blaine might be gay, he might not.”

“Kissing you on our front porch is pretty gay, Kurt.”

“It isn’t about labels. It isn’t about being gay or straight or bisexual or anything else with Blaine. It’s about him falling in love with someone he’s not supposed to love. Personally, yes, I think Blaine is gay. But that isn’t my story to tell. This is about him coming to terms with who he is. The fact that he seems to have fallen in love with me is definitely in my favor, but I refuse to try and force a label on him and I refuse to force him into any situation that he’s not comfortable with.”

Burt’s face softens as he looks at his son. Kurt falls silent because he doesn’t have much else to add to the story. He twists his fingers together nervously under his father’s gaze.

“You’ve grown up so much,” Burt says unexpectedly.

“I know,” Kurt nods. “I’m sorry I lied to you and said we were just friends. But Blaine was-”

“I get it,” Burt interrupts. “I don’t like that you lied to me, but I understand why you did. Fact is, I’m glad to hear that you’re so dedicated and respectful to someone.”

“You can’t tell anyone,” Kurt says quickly. “Not even Carole. And especially not Finn.”

“Carole wouldn’t say anything, you know she wouldn’t.”

“I know. But Blaine doesn’t want anyone to know.”

“I don’t like lying to other parents,” Burt reminds him.

“I know, dad. But this isn’t like we got caught doing something stupid or illegal. This is way more complicated.”

“Well,” Burt says just as the doorbell rings. “Guess it’s a good thing I’ve never met them.”

His father stands and answers the door, greeting the Chinese delivery guy. Kurt immediately whips out his phone and sends Blaine one simple text message.

We’re going to be okay. My dad understands everything. He won’t say a word.

End Notes: TBCSometimes, secrets need to be discovered, if only to discover the right path in the end. Also, I realize these last few chapters have been moving a little sluggishly. The fact is, not everything in a relationship is crazy, wild, or in your face. One must learn to appreciate the little things. These little things will be leading up to something much bigger.

askdjlaskdf;alsdkf Oh my gosh. Someone knows. Thank god it was Burt!

Burt Hummel for every flawless parent award. Jamie! I'm oh so intrigued as to where this is going. I can't wait!

I would really suck to have to hide who you love from the world!

I've been tracking this story because I adore your writing, but I haven't read it till today. This is really compelling. Kurt exploring others' points of view on religion has piqued my interest, and I'm enjoying Kurt being the confident one who is sort of the male lead in this relationship. Now that I'm caught up, I'm afraid I'll be suffering after every chapter, what with waiting for updates and all. Totally worth it! Thanks for a marvelous fic.

here's my love for burt xx here's my love for this story xxxxx

I really love this chapter! The first part was absolutely adorable, and then I like the way that Burt reacted to everything, I thought it was very believable. I can't wait for the next chapter!

Oiii. I love this story. Never before have I so consistently reviewed and recommended a story (: I LOVE YOU. And I love that Papa Burt found out. Looks like the Andersons will find out soon though? Looking forward to the angst - They'll both be better for it in the end.

I hope Blaine's parents are good to him when he finally gathers the courage. Burt was so understanding. Can't wait for the next chapter!

ahh! I loved it! I love your portrayal of Burt, it seemed so realistic! Poor Blaine though :'(

JAMIE, WTF IS UP WITH YOUR A/Ns AND LEAVING ME HANGING LIKE THAT?! Whatever, this chapter was BEYOND amazing. The fluff and the fact that Blaine's coming to terms with what he's feeling and Kurt and Burt moments and just aklsdjfla;ksdjfalk; YES. -xoxo

can i just... i love burt. cute sweet chapter :)

Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Papa Burt. Kurtsie. Blainers. hdhsksjdjsksjdlsdj Can't wait for the next chapter!!

Poor Blaine...he's still so vulnerable. Burt is seriously so cool though, I love how understanding he is. I really can't wait for the next chapter, this story is so addictive!

Where can I get a Burt Hummel please ? Veggies AND Fries on the side, that would be awesome !

YOU. ARE. THE. MOST. AMAZING. WRITER. EVER. I. LOVE. YOU. SO. DAMN. MUCH.

Oh my. The first time Blaine kisses Kurt in public, they get caught by Burt! I feel so sorry for Blaine. I'm glad that Burt isn't going to tell Blaine's parents. I'm afraid if he does, the Hummels will have a new house guest.

Kurt was so reasonable and explained every little detail with just so much love for Blaine. Looooved this chapter :) xxxx

When I saw the tittle, for a secind I thought it would be Blaine's dad to find out about them. I was so worried! Then I read it and of course, it's amazing. Burt Hummel, we love you so much. And Kurt sounds all grown up too! I do wonder how it's going to go when Blaine's parents learn about it though...

What a wonderful chapter! Burt's reaction is completely IC and I love it, but I think my favorite reaction is Blaine's. This is such a hard thing for him & his intense fear is so raw.

Hi there. This is the first time I've reviewed but I've been following the story for a while. It is such a great premise, and so well researched (are you a religion major/teacher - I loved religious studies in university - took many classes and am also religious myself (Jewish)) The shabbat dinner way back amused me to no end. And thank you for showing the many shades of relgiousness, while not shying away from the hard stuff. I also love the innocence and intimacy between them (first time fics always get me when done well and the build up here, even to finally kissing, was just so sweet). Can I ask - is it finished and you're posting each day or two (thank you for not keeping us in suspense too long - I'm kind of addicted)? Or are you still writing. It's really great. Thank you.

Okay, so. I made an account just to review this chapter. But first, I have a loooot to say that I haven't said before. Your stories are amazing. I read the McKlainely Series in July and got addicted. Shortly after I read all the other stories/oneshots you wrote, and I just LOVE them all. You are such an amazing writer, my absolute favorite on here. I love you, a lot. Please never stop writing :) Anywho. This story. It's caused a lot of mixed emotions from me while I've been reading it. But that's a part of being such the amazing writer that you are, is that you can make someone's feelings on a fictional story based off a fictional TV show so strong. It's definitely an angle I've never seen done before, and for that I love it. Originality has a huge affect on how much I like a story. And, of course, how well written it is. (You are absolutely fantastic at that, by the way.) So I love this chapter. But the main reason I wanted to review was because of the End Notes. So when you say secrets need to be discovered... I'm assuming you mean Blaine's parents and/or the kids of McKinley find out?? That makes me sort of worried...about everyone's reaction, particularly his parents, and Blaine's reaction to theirs... But you did say "if only to discover the right path in the end", so I'm guessing that in one way or another, even if Blaine's parents don't approve, things will work out the way they should :)

I just read this entire thing up to the latest chapter and Jamie, you have done it again. Moving A Person To Tears 101- you're a pro, woman. Such a gorgeously written and earnestly explored piece of work. Literally cannot wait for more! :'D

Holy awesomesauce, this is excellent! The way you've written Burt is spot-on. I love this fic so much, such a creative idea :D. Wonderful update; anxiously awaiting your next!

Awww I love Burt Hummel :D And I'm really impressed with Kurt not wanting to use "labels" on Blaine.

If this story doesn't end happily I might die a little. Wonderful work as always-- no worries if it's slow, sometimes things just roll that way.

I love Burt a lot.

But I like these sluggish chapters with all the little things! Oh I just wanna take little Blainers and Kurtsie and just hug them both tightly and kiss their little faces and just make them feel better.

personally, i kind of thought that burt acted a with less compassion towards kurt in a way that was somewhat unlike his character on the show, but it was understandable the way a parent would react in that way after seeing what kurt and blaine did. i hope everything for blaine will turn out okay real soon!! again, poor thing <3 <3 <3

I loved this partThe main course will be an explanation with a healthy side dish of what the hell." Great chapter. I swear this story gets so much better with every chapter and I thought it was already amazing when I first started :)

Poor Blaine :( I'm sure he was terrified.
