He even called the same night after Santana had gone to bed early because she had a late shift the next day. They spent an hour on the phone, talking about completely irrelevant and silly things until they both fell asleep on their phones.
When Kurt wakes up the next morning, he has a phone-shaped imprint on his cheek but he couldn’t care less. He’s the happiest he’s been in a while though a part of him tells him he shouldn’t be.
And he knows, eventually, everything that’s wrong about this situation will come crashing down on him. If not now, then in about a month when Santana will be walking down the aisle to marry the man Kurt is currently mooning over. But for now, Blaine calls him and texts him and Kurt refuses to even think about what is to come. He wants to be happy for once.
He wants to feel like someone cares and like he isn’t the guy who will be forever alone. When he’s with Blaine, he feels fulfilled and content with everything. And he really, really wishes he could hold on to that, even though the future is the most uncertain thing ever right now.
When he’s in his office the next day and has just said goodbye to his latest clients, the noise of his messenger makes him turn towards the screen of his computer.
“Hi.” He sees and smiles slightly.
“Hey,” he writes back, biting back a grin. “Shouldn’t you be working?”
“I am. People don’t commit enough crimes anymore. Makes the life of a lawyer boring.”
Kurt chuckles and shakes his head, his fingers working swiftly over the keyboard as his eyes stay fixed on the screen, just in case. There is no way he will miss any messages here.
“Oh I’m sure the bride I just had is ready to kill someone so don’t worry about it.”
This time, it takes a while for Blaine to answer and Kurt wonders if anything did come up and Blaine left, but then another message pops up.
“Are you alone?”
Kurt frowns a little but shrugs it off as he answers. “I am. Why?”
But he doesn’t get an answer. Confused, he’s about to ask Blaine again when his phone goes off and he’s quick to grab it when he recognizes the number on the display.
“Blaine.” He says, a smile spreading across his face.
“Hey,” he hears the voice that’s like honey flowing through the line in his ear and leans back to push his feet up against the edge of the table and pull his knees to his chest. He feels like fifteen, calling his very first crush.
“Still no dead people?”
“Sadly no.”
“You’re a sadist, Blaine Anderson.”
Blaine laughs softly and it makes Kurt’s heart melt a little as he clutches the phone tighter and tips his head back against the chair.
“Why are you calling?” Kurt finally asks. He doesn’t mind it of course, actually, this is the best part of his day so far, but he’s still curious as to what the reason for all of this is.
Blaine’s silent for a second and Kurt holds the phone away to check the screen and make sure he hasn’t hung up yet when he speaks up again.
“I was wondering if you were free tonight.” He says, his voice certain.
“Uhm. Yes…” Kurt says slowly, wondering what this is about.
“Good. I was wondering if… you’d want to go to dinner. Strictly work of course.”
Kurt’s a little taken aback at first because he hadn’t been expecting this. He had thought that Blaine and him were going to be noting more than friends now. But what he hadn’t thought would happen was for him to invite him to dinner.
“Sure… I’d love that.” He finally manages to say.
“Wonderful. I’ll pick you up at six.”
“Perfect.”
“It’s a date.”
Kurt can’t help his heart fluttering at this because a date, that’s something he hasn’t really experienced yet. He wished, yes, but it never happened. And now this gorgeous man was going to do exactly that with him tonight.
“A work date.” He grins whatsoever and hears Blaine chuckle on the other end of the line.
“Of course. I’ll see you then.”
“Yeah. Do your work.” Kurt teases before he hangs up.
So it’s a date. And Kurt Hummel would be dammed if he wouldn’t manage to take the opportunity to look even more fabulous than he does already normally.
Several hours later when it’s just starting to get dark outside, Kurt puts the finishing touches on his hair. He’s wearing a pair of black, skin-tight jeans and an oversized crochet sweater than slips slightly off one shoulder but doesn’t manage to show too much skin. He personally thinks he looks wonderful.
That’s when the doorbell rips him out of his thoughts. Smoothing his hair back one last time, he grabs the coat and puts it on in the elevator as he can’t get downstairs soon enough.
He exits the building to find Blaine leaning against his black car but he pushes off as soon as he sees him.
And the way his face lights up makes Kurt feel all light headed already. It’s like he only sees him when he gives him that smile. Like he’s the only person in the world that matters in that moment.
“You look beautiful.” And he smiles as Kurt approaches him and he suddenly notices that it’s a lot better to be told that he looked good than to just know it from looking in the mirror.
“Thank you. You don’t look so bad yourself.” He grins as he eyes Blaine’s look. He’s wearing dark jeans and a button down shirt as well and looks absolutely delicious.
Blaine simply smiles and opens the car door for him, so Kurt slips inside. Once Blaine is sat on the driver’s side, he reaches over to grasp at his hand and give it a squeeze. Kurt doesn’t hesitate before he interlaces their fingers and smiles down on their clasped hands. That looks kind of nice.
“Where are we heading?” he asks as he finally lifts his eyes back up to meet Blaine’s.
“You’ll see.”
And from the look on Blaine’s face, Kurt knows he isn’t getting more out of him, so he doesn’t ask. He just stays still and looks out of the window into the darkness as they drive. He has lost all orientation by now and has now clue where they are.
A few minutes later, Blaine pulls the car up on the side of the road and gets out, opening the door for Kurt. He isn’t even fully out of the car before Blaine grabs his hand again and squeezes.
“Where are we?” Kurt asks again but Blaine just shoots him a secretive smile and tugs him along. It turns out they have stopped right in front of a small park. It’s completely dark, there are no street lights whatsoever and Kurt clings onto Blaine’s hand so he won’t trip in his amazing shoes.
After a few minutes of walking, something catches Kurt’s eye. Right there, a few meters away from them and opposite a small lake that’s glistening in the moonlight, is something. Something that includes light.
As they step closer, Kurt realizes there are candles on the old wooden picnic table there, along with several small boxes of food. His eyes go wide as they keep walking and he stares over at Blaine once they’re close.
“You- Did you do this?” he asks sheepishly, but he has to.
“No, the elves I hide in my basement did.” He jokes and winks at him which makes Kurt groan and roll his eyes.
“Do you like it though?” he asks hopefully and Kurt thinks he looks like a child on Christmas morning so he can’t bring himself to make a comment about thanking the elves.
“I do.” He smiles and leans into him a bit. Blaine’s arm immediately wraps around his waist and pulls him just that much closer until he can press a kiss to his temple. Kurt feels safe.
“Okay, let’s sit down.” He heard Blaine whisper in his ear and it makes him shudder slightly as he nuzzles against his cheek and finally lets go to walk around the table and sit down. Kurt follows shortly after.
Blaine has really made an effort, Kurt decides. There are sandwiches, several bowls of fruits and vegetables and drinks.
“Pretty elaborate for a work-dinner.” Kurt grins as he grabs a grape and pops it in his mouth. Blaine grins in return.
“Well, you have to keep your work partners entertained, don’t you?”
Kurt hums in agreement and reaches for a strawberry, taking a slow bite.
“So, Blaine, how was you d-“ he breaks off when Blaine looks completely zones out, sort of staring ahead.
“Blaine?”
He’s still staring and Kurt looks down until he realizes he’s staring at the strawberry and – oh.
“Blaine.” He grins and considers throwing the rest of the berry at him but decides not to. When he clears his throat, the other male does look up at last.
“Oh. Sorry. I… got lost in thoughts.” He mumbles and eyes the table with way too much interest.
“Of course.” Kurt smirks and eats the left half of the strawberry before he looks back at Blaine. “I think the work partner is entertaining you here rather than the other way around.”
Kurt has no clue where this is coming from, the whole flirty business. He doesn’t really flirt, ever. He wouldn’t even know what to do. But when he’s with Blaine, it just feels so easy and comes naturally; he can’t really help it. When he smiles at him, Kurt’s heart swells and even though he knows that this is all so wrong, there is no way he’s stopping.
They eat in silence, sharing a secretive smile every now and then and chuckling like teenagers when their hands brush against each others while reaching for food. It’s so very romantic here, under the dark roof of the trees with the lake sparkling and sending soft noises that make the atmosphere even calmer right next to them.
Kurt isn’t sure how much time has passed when they start packing up, but the moon stands higher on the black sky so it must be getting late.
They carry the leftovers back to the car and the ride back is a quiet one again. But he silence is never uncomfortable. It seems like just being with each other makes everything so much easier and there’s no need for big speeches; it’s all in the looks and glances and gentle touches.
It’s magical.
When they actually arrive back at Kurt’s apartment, they both get out and Blaine walks around the car where Kurt waits for him. It must really be late because the streets are empty and there’s only the doorman left, but he turns to talk to a lady coming downstairs to ask him something right now.
“It was a wonderful night.” Kurt says quietly, as he’s almost scared that too loud words may break the quiet and careful atmosphere.
“It was.” Blaine agrees as he stops in front of him and slowly reaches out to take one of his hands.
Kurt smiles to himself and gives the hand in his a squeeze as he glances up to meet Blaine’s eyes.
It’s so perfect, so comfortable, that Kurt can’t help but ask.
“Do you want to come upstairs with me?”
He doesn’t even think about it and he has no idea what he’s indicating by this or if this is sending the wrong message. Tonight has been one of the most amazing ones of his night, so whatever is to happen, is to happen.
But Blaine doesn’t react the way he had hoped he would. He doesn’t crash his lips into his and drags him inside. He doesn’t even smile.
“I’d love to…” he says slowly, eyes darting down to their hands. “But I can’t.”
“Sure you can. This is new for me as well. We’ll figure something out.”
At that, Blaine laughs a little and looks back up at him. “It’s not that, Kurt.”
Kurt flushes and looks away, biting his lip. Wonderful. So he just embarrassed himself with sex-talk when this wasn’t even the topic here. He’s probably getting ahead of himself anyways and Blaine doesn’t even want this. He surely looks like a hormonal, pervy kid.
“Why?” he finally musters the courage to ask.
“Santana will be home soon.”
“Oh.”
Kurt really doesn’t know what to do anymore. He has tried to push this away, has tried to forget about the fact that Blaine has a fiance and that he’s getting married. But all of this is happening and Kurt can’t change that. He’s just the affair of Blaine, nothing more. And that’s all he’s ever going to be. The sharp pain in his heart follows instantly, but he ignores all of his feelings at this point.
“I’m so sorry.” Blaine whispers and moves in. Kurt sees a hand reaching out for his face from the corner of his eye, but he backs away.
“Don’t.”
“Kurt, please. I-“ Blaine stutters but Kurt only walks around him and towards the door.
“It’s fine. Just go home.” He says rather loudly and it physically hurts him when he sees Blaine flinch.
“Kurt,” Blaine calls out again but Kurt only shakes his head. He can’t. He can’t allow himself to get into this even more when it’s hurting so much already. It’s all too much. He wants romance but he doesn’t want it this way and he surely doesn’t want to take it away from anyone else. And though Santana isn’t exactly the nicest person towards him, she doesn’t deserve this.
He sees Blaine back off, biting his lip hard as he moves to the door on the driver’s side.
“I’ll call you.” He says and looks over at Kurt who has his arms wrapped around his waist as to hold himself together.
Lifting his teary eyes to look at where Blaine is still standing, looking back at him, he takes a shaky breath before he answers.
“Don’t.”
