“You don't owe me anything,” Blaine assured him. “But what did you have in mind?”
“Well I was thinking that I could cook you dinner whenever you decide you want to move in.” Kurt was rolling a cherry tomato across his plate mindlessly as he spoke.
“Can I move in tonight?” Blaine was obviously joking, but Kurt wished he really wasn't.
“What about Friday night? We can drive to your place after school, pick up your things and go back to mine?”
“Sounds great.”
Just then, Rachel Berry slid into the seat next to Blaine. “Hello classmates!”
Kurt and Blaine stared at each other in confusion. “But we don't have any classes-”
“Just thought that I should come over and welcome you to McKinley!” Rachel continued.
“But we've been here since-”
“And I thought you two might like to be new recruits in our glee club, New Directions.”
Kurt did briefly consider the possibility of joining glee club when he arrived at McKinley, but shortly dismissed it after learning that Rachel was a part of it, and most likely, the 'star'. A presumption made on account of her obnoxiousness.
“Actually Rachel, we aren't really-” Kurt tried to sound sincere in his rejection, but was cut off yet again.
“We'll be there.”' Blaine assured. An even brighter smile lit up Rachel's face before she turned and skipped away happily.
“Having second thoughts about Berry?” Kurt enquired jokingly. “Really Blaine, glee club? Are you mad?”
“That's unlikely, she's still as intolerable as ever.” Blaine scoffed before he took a bite of his sandwich. “It will be fun, you'll love it!”
“Do you have any idea how people in glee club are treated? I thought you came here because you wanted to get away from that.” Kurt argued. “I thought you just wanted to be treated like everyone else...”
“Not if it means I have to be who everyone else wants me to be.”
“I kind of love that about you. That you don't really care what anyone else thinks.” Kurt confessed shyly. “I feel bad. I didn't even know you could sing.”
“There's a lot you don't know about me Kurt Hummel.” Blaine retorted, reaching over and picking the slices of cucumber Kurt had left untouched on the rest of his salad.
“I still don't want to go to glee club.”
Unfortunately for Kurt, Blaine didn't care how much he did or didn't want to go to glee club. He insisted that they would have fun and meet new people; more or less everything that Kurt had not intended on doing this year.
So that afternoon, Kurt nervously entered the glee room while Blaine seemed a lot more excited. And as it turned out, it really wasn't as bad as Kurt thought it was going to be. Mr Schuester only had to tell Rachel to sit down twice and Brittany made everyone laugh. Kurt actually enjoyed himself, and there was no doubt that Blaine did too. He had even sung a solo in front of the group, which only made Kurt fall a little bit harder for him.
“See, it was fun, wasn't it?” Blaine said as they stepped out of school into the cool night air. The carpark was empty and it was dead silent around them.
“I hate to admit that you're right, but yes, it was fun. You win.” Kurt hated to be defeated, but he would let Blaine have the honour, just this once.
They both walked slowly to Kurt's car. Neither of them wanted to leave. Perfect nights like this didn't come around too often and it was a pity to let one go to waste.
Kurt leaned against the side of his car and sighed. “I guess I should go.”
Blaine stood in front of Kurt, putting his arms on the car either side of Kurt. “Why are you always running away from me?” He moved forward further, breathing against Kurt's ear.
Kurt's heart was pounding in his chest, resonating through his ears. He nervously reached out and held Blaine by the waist.
“I'm not running away. In fact, I think I could stay here for a little while.” Kurt breathed shakily as Blaine gently pressed his lips below his ear, moving them slowly down the side of Kurt's neck.
Kurt followed Blaine's shaking hands as they gradually moved up to the button on the collar of his shirt. His fingers carefully pulled the button out of its hole, brushed his shirt aside and gently kissed Kurt's collarbone.
Kurt didn't think they were moving too fast, not at all, but suddenly he found himself feeling sick again. He tried to push the feeling away, knowing it was all in his head, but he just couldn't.
He took his hands off Blaine's waist and nudged him away softly, so he wouldn't hurt his feelings.
“Goodnight Kurt.” Blaine whispered softly ,before placing a kiss on Kurt's forehead, and turning around to his car.
Kurt's breathing still hadn't slowed, and he could feel the movement in his stomach increase. He was proud of himself for letting Blaine a little closer. He knew he could overcome this, whatever it was, he just needed some time to heal and Blaine's patience.
The rest of the week passed like nothing had happened, which wasn't entirely bad. Though Kurt found himself missing the way Blaine's soft lips kissed his skin, and the warm rush of blood to his cheeks after.
Occasionally, when no one else was around, Blaine would lean into Kurt's ear and tell him how much he wanted to kiss him or hold him. It took all he had to suppress a moan and walk away.
When Friday finally rolled around, Kurt was convinced that Blaine had given up on him. But it was Friday; the day that Blaine was supposed to move in. Thankfully, Blaine hadn't forgotten either.
Kurt was extremely surprised when they arrived at Blaine's. The apartment was much smaller than Kurt's, with barely enough room for one person, let alone two. He expected Blaine to have a lot more than what he had; just one suitcase.
“That's it? You move here by yourself and you bring one suitcase?”
Blaine let out a laugh. “I pack light. Come on, let's get out of here.” He pressed his hand to the side of Kurt's cheek, kissed his other one gently and was out the door as fast as he could.
“What's the rush?” Kurt asked as he lingered around Blaine's apartment.
“Because I hate this place. And I want to get back to yours before you change your mind.”
“Relax, I'm not going to change my mind.”
Just as Kurt was about to turn around and leave, he noticed a photo on the ground. Perhaps one that Blaine had dropped while packing. Over anything else in the picture, the first thing he noticed were her eyes. The eyes that he had seen before. The eyes that seemed to follow him wherever he went.
“My Mom...” Blaine had suddenly appeared by Kurt's side and spoke softly. “I miss her.”
“You look just like her.”
“My Brother looks a lot more like her. His hair is a lot lighter than mine. And his eyes are more green too.” Blaine recalled, smiling at the photo.
A shudder ripped through Kurt's body and the photo slipped from his fingertips.
“Everything okay?” Blaine bent over, picking up the dropped photo and slipping it into his pocket. “You look like you've just seen a ghost.”
And that's what it felt like. Seeing a photo of someone with such a striking resemblance to somebody he used to know made Kurt panic a little bit.
“You haven't said much about your Brother. You two aren't close?” Kurt began as they pulled out of the parking lot. He knew he shouldn't be asking, but the curiosity was overwhelming him.
“Not really. I mean, I haven't seen him for 3 or so years and we haven't kept in touch.” Blaine's voice had turned hard and rough, in comparison to the soft, sweet tone he usually spoke in.
“Even growing up together, we didn't get along so well. We were like yin and yang. It's hard to believe sometimes, that you can have the same blood, but be so different, you know?”
Kurt noticed that Blaine sounded angry, but didn't say anything to avoid adding fuel to the fire. He just let the subject drop, and the pair sat in silence until they reached Kurt's apartment.
“Did I upset you?” Kurt asked after he noticed the cold expression on Blaine's face had not disappeared.
“No, not at all. It just makes me angry to know that people like him exist.” Blaine closed his eyes to stop himself from crying. “He's done a lot of really bad things. He's also the reason my parents divorced, and I'll never forgive him for that.”
Kurt reached over and placed his hand on Blaine's. His eyes immediately opened and a small smile appeared on his face.
“I'm sorry,” Kurt apologised, lifting his other hand to stroke Blaine's cheek. “I've ruined our night again, haven't I?”
“You could never do such a thing,” Blaine whispered and lifted his hand to Kurt, mimicking his action. “I really like you Kurt, I hope you know that.”
Neither of them had to say anything more.
