Hi guys =) I know I'm terrible late with this and I'm really sorry. Sometimes life gets in the way and the whole schedule I have planned is suddenly out the window. =D Enjoy the end of this story!
It was a nice, early winter, late afternoon. Blaine was watching the snow falling slowly on New York City. It was three weeks till Christmas and weather like this made Blaine yearn for a walk in streets covered by snow, grabbing a hot chocolate on the way. It was a winter tradition, yet he still didn't dare to do it this year. Not without Kurt. Kurt and his excitement was what made the tradition so special to Blaine. He finally unglued himself from the window. He walked into his daughter's room, sure he would find some distraction there.
Elise was seated by the table, drawing something very colorful on the paper if the amount of crayons on the desktop was any indication.
"Can I interrupt you for a second?" Elise tore her eyes from the drawing and looked at her father curiously, clutching the purple crayon firmly in her hand.
"Yes, daddy?"
"What would you like for dinner, Sunshine?"
"Can you make your special chicken tortillas?"
"Of course. What are you drawing?"
"A picture for Isaac," Elise showed him the paper. There was a big rainbow and underneath, three attempts that were probably supposed to be cars. Blaine couldn't really tell. His daughter wasn't an artist in the slightest but she did her best and that's what counted.
"I'm sure he's gonna love it," Blaine said to her sweetly and got a wide, two-teeth-missing smile from her in return.
"He was very sad today."
"Oh, why?"
"Because his mommies didn't call him yesterday. I told him my dad didn't call me either but it's not the same, you know."
"It's not?"
"No. Because I still have you at home when dad isn't here. But he only has Grandma Lopez and she's great but she's not his mother."
"Elise," Blaine knelt in front of her and took her hands in his. "You know Dad would have called if he could, right? Same goes for Aunt Tana and Aunt Dani. They would have called Isaac if they could. The tour is a very important job and they had lots of interviews before the concert yesterday. They didn't have a chance to call until it was too late and you were sleeping."
"I know, Daddy. And Isaac knows too. He just misses them very much. Like you and I miss Dad but we have each other. We can miss him together but Isaac is alone and he doesn't want to worry Grandma Lopez so he tries not to show how much he misses them when he is at home. He only shows me."
"Are you drawing the picture to make him feel better?"
"Yes. In case they don't call today. I don't like it when he's sad. I'll give it to him tomorrow at school. And I also convinced to read us The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at school today."
"I thought you didn't like that story."
"I don't. But Isaac does and while she was reading he forgot to miss his moms," Elise explained and started coloring the cars on the paper. Blaine stood up and headed to the door, ready to start on dinner when a small hand caught his wrist.
"Daddy?" Elise fixed her blue eyes at him, her features serious and thoughtful. "Can we invite Isaac for the weekend?"
"Of course we can, Sunshine. I'll call Mrs. Lopez to let her know, okay?"
"Okay," Elise nodded and bit her lower lip, the habit Blaine was sure she observed from Kurt. "And can we go to the museum on Saturday?"
"The museum?" Blaine raised his eyebrows, surprised. "Which museum?"
"The natural one."
"The Museum of Natural History? You didn't like it there when we went…"
"Isaac loves it though...Dad says that when you love someone you just want to make them happy. Even though you sometimes end up doing things you hate. That's why dad goes to football games with you when Uncle Sam can't go and you watch reality shows with him when Uncle Elliot isn't around…"
"You think I hate reality shows?"
"Oh please, Daddy. You never watch them without Dad. If you liked them, you would watch them even when Dad isn't home."
"Okay. I don't like reality shows and Dad doesn't like football very much but it doesn't mean you have to spend the day doing something you don't like only to make Isaac happy. I'm pretty sure we could come up with something you will both like."
"No, Daddy. Isaac was super sad today and I want to make him super happy. I can go to the museum with him. There is nothing that he would like more. Dad would go to a thousand football games with you if you were sad. The museum is like a football game, you know. I wanna go there with Isaac."
"Okay. If you insist, we'll go to the museum. Isaac is a very lucky guy to have a friend like you."
"He's my secret boyfriend," Elise said seriously, leaving her father speechless. "He would be my real boyfriend but told us we should be at least twelve to start dating. So we keep it a secret."
"And how does this...ehm...secret dating thing work?" Blaine asked carefully, already thinking of how he would bring up the topic to his husband later. Oh and by the way, Baby, while you were touring around the world, our daughter found herself a boyfriend.
"Well, we hug when we meet every morning at school. And we sit together at lunch. He holds my hand when I'm sad and he always stands up for me when older kids are mean to me. He says he is gonna marry me one day."
"Does he?" Blaine raised his eyebrows, shaking his head in disbelief but Elise didn't seem to notice.
"Yes, he does. I didn't know if I wanted to marry him, too, so I told him I needed some time to think about it. I asked Dad how he knew he wanted to marry you. He told me that you 'get him' and make him feel happy and loved. And that you love him for who he is, with good and bad things, so of course he wanted to be with you for forever. He also said that you are his best friend and that there is nothing better than marrying your best friend. Isaac is my best friend and he gets me, you know. I think I want to marry him too. But we need to start dating for real first, until we can get married, and it's still five years until we're twelve." Elise ended her monologue with a deep sigh and Blaine had to beat the urge to laugh at his daughter's love troubles.
"Let me know when you start dating him for real, okay? Dad and I would like to have a little chat with him then."
"Okay."
"I'm gonna start on dinner. Will you help me?"
"Sure. I can finish the picture later."
Elise went to bed without a phone call from her Dad again. Which meant that Santana and Dani didn't call home either. Super sad Isaac was going to be extra super sad Isaac in the morning at school and Blaine wished he could make it easier for the kids but he was at a loss. The whole year had been very challenging. It was the first world tour Kurt's band ever had and the time management was difficult. Kurt did his best to call his daughter every day but sometimes it was impossible.
"I'm so tired of it, Blaine," Kurt admitted to his husband that night, long after midnight when he finally got a chance to make a phone call. "Santana is ready to fire our manager because he screwed up. He put too much on us these past few days and, God, we didn't even have time to breathe between interviews, meet and greets, shows and traveling to the next location. I can't wait for this to be over. I don't ever want to be away from home for more than a week."
"It isn't that bad. We miss you like crazy but we're doing fine. I promise. You'll be home next week and that's all that matters, okay?"
"I feel like I wasted a whole year of our lives."
"You were doing your job, Baby."
"I am a father and husband. Yet, I've spent more time away from home than with my family over the past twelve months. I don't like it. It's not worth it."
"Next week you'll be home. The tour is over in a few days and you'll come back to us. Focus on that. We can't wait to see you."
"I miss you both so much, Blaine. I knew it would be difficult from the start but it was worse than I expected it would be. Never again."
"Elise made you a video before she went to sleep. I'm gonna email it to you."
"Was she mad that I didn't call two days in a row?"
"No. She was sad but not mad. She understands that you have a lot of work...She is amazing, Kurt. Sometimes she's so much like you...the way she talks and acts. She wants to go to The Museum of Natural History with Isaac on Saturday, to make him happy. Because apparently that's what we do when we want to make each other happy."
"We go to the museum when we want to make each other happy?"
"No, but we do things that we hate to make the other happy. Like you going to a football game with me or me watching reality shows with you."
"I've never said to her that I hate football. How does she know?"
"She is a great observer. You never go to the game with me when someone else is going…"
"Yeah, that's right. She is a very clever girl."
"She is just like you. More acting than expressing feelings through words. I love that about her. You are such a great father, Kurt. She admires you so much. Sometimes it's hard to believe that she's adopted. One would think she's your own blood."
"She is perfect. And in lot of things she is just like you - sweet and caring, trying to please people...I love you both so much. I can't wait to get home and hold you in my arms again."
"We love you too. Only a week."
"The longest week of my life."
Blaine got ready for bed early the night Kurt came home from the tour. He was already lying on top of their bed covers when Kurt merged out of the bathroom, wearing only his pajama pants. He walked slowly to the bed and crawled over to get on top of his loving husband to finally share the kiss he was dying to give him since he appeared at the door a few hours back. With Elise not leaving his side until she was tucked in her bed, peacefully sleeping, they had to keep it chaste, but now, Kurt was taking full advantage of having Blaine's lips at his disposal.
"If I wasn't tired as hell I would so have my way with you right this moment, Mr. Anderson - Hummel."
"Come here," Blaine patted the spot next to him and Kurt rolled down to lay there. He put his head on Blaine's shoulder and let his husband to play with his hair.
"I'll tell you what we do now. We'll sleep. Then I'll take our daughter to school in the morning and when I come back, you can have your way with me until mid afternoon when we'll have to pick her up from her ballet class."
"I like the plan. But I'm taking her to school with you."
"Kurt, you don't have to. You said it yourself. You're tired. You could use some good sleep."
"No, Blaine. I wanna take my daughter to school!"
"Okay," Blaine said soothingly, wrapping his arm around Kurt tighter. "You can go with us. I didn't mean to upset you."
"I know. I'm sorry I snapped at you. I just missed those little things I love about being a parent so much. Do you remember her first day at school?"
"Yeah. We were more excited than she was," Blaine chuckled.
"I have to tell you something," Kurt confessed quietly. "I probably should have told you sooner but I didn't want to explain it on the phone…"
"Should I be scared?"
"No," Kurt sat up immediately, taking his hands and lacing their fingers. "Not at all. But we always make big decisions together and I had to make this one without you…"
"Decision about what?"
"Our band...We had long conversations about it, we really discussed it thoroughly and we decided to take a break."
"Oh…For how long?"
"Undetermined...maybe we'll never release another album. At least five years…"
"But why? You've just made it big worldwide with your last album. I don't understand…"
"The irony is, it is because we've made it big worldwide. This year has been insane and we don't want to do it again. Being away from home for so long was too much. We were able to manage our family life with our career while all of it was happening here, but flying across the world and not coming home for three or four months is not what we want. We need a break. I want to see my daughter growing up. I want to be here when she needs me. I want to be here when you need me. You had to give up Broadway so I could go on tour. You've spent a year at home so our daughter wasn't raised by a nanny. I spent exactly forty-two days at home this year. Divided in three visits. I missed her birthday. I missed our wedding anniversary. I missed her ballet recital. I wasn't here when she was sick for almost two weeks. You had to take care of everything."
"I didn't mind, Kurt. My first appearance on Broadway was twelve years ago. I really enjoyed the break."
"This is not how I imagined my family to work. We are both parents and we both should be here. I love making music and being on a stage. But I love time spent with you and Elise even more."
"Did you guys really think this through? You were tired and also pissed at your team for bad time management. Maybe in a few weeks you'll see everything differently…"
"We won't."
"Okay. If you think this will make you happy, I'm all for it. But as soon as you feel like you want to go back to music, you'll go back. Promise me?"
"I promise. Although, I'll be pretty busy in the coming years and I doubt music will be on my mind," Kurt smiled teasingly and Blaine knew he wasn't telling him something.
"And what will make you so busy?"
"Parenting."
"Elise can be a handful but she doesn't require your full attention 24/7."
"Yeah, but with more kids in the house, we'll have plenty to take care of."
"M-more kids?" Blaine asked with wide eyes, squeezing his husbands hands firmly from excitement. "You mean like our kids?"
"Of course ours, silly. Maybe one or two...Elise has been asking for a sibling since she was four."
"You wanna have three kids?"
"No. I wanna have four but I didn't want to overwhelm you."
"Four? Oh my god! Really?"
"When we got married, you said you wanted to have at least three kids."
"I know, but we adopted Elise six years after that and we always said that we'd adopt another when the time is right. It's been five years since Elise came. I thought that many kids were off the table now since we didn't go for another adoption when Elise settled in."
"Are you saying we're old?" Kurt raised his eyebrows and gave Blaine a disapproving look. "I just turned 35. I'm NOT too old for adopting three kids!"
"No. We are not old. We can adopt as many kids as you want. We can contact the agency tomorrow and start the adoption process."
"We should talk to Elise first. But we'll call the agency soon. I really want to focus on our family from now on."
"I can't believe you're too tired to have sex but not too tired to discuss our future kids."
"I couldn't wait to tell you. We can discuss it further tomorrow, after sex."
"How romantic of you," Blaine laughed and lay down, bringing his husband with him. Kurt curled into his side again and wrapped his arm around Blaine's waist.
"I love you. Marrying you and starting a family with you was the best decision I've ever made."
"I'm very happy about your decision, Kurt."
"I'm glad to hear it, Baby."
"Goodnight. I love you."
"I love you too. Goodnight."
Thank you very much for reading and sticking around till the end. It really means a lot to me. Big THANK YOU goes to Kelly, the best beta I could ever ask for. And also to Lallagoglee who made an art for this story.
For those who are wondering what is going on with OGTDA, I'm working on it. I can't promise when the next chapter will be up but I'm gonna finish that story for sure. Please, bear with me. =)
Have a great day!
Nika =)
