Signing autograph after autograph. Smiling for pictures with sweet girls, who always apologize for the flash but never stop using it. Hugs and kisses on the cheek. Rushed conversations of mostly just rambling. Still pumped from the post show buzz. This was Blaine's life all summer, and it was all coming to an end. He had talked to numerous musicians in preparation for his tour, including some of his friends from his Warbler days. They each had their own take on tour life. But, everyone agreed on one thing: closing night is bittersweet.
They didn't belong there and they knew it. Surrounded by the young girls, all wearing the same pink sunglasses Blaine wore, they stuck out like two sore thumbs. But, there was no backing out now. They watched the whole show from balcony seats, feeling too young surrounded by the parents. Now they've been waiting outside his bus for hours. While pulling up to the venue, seeing his bus parked by the back door, gave them an idea they thought was brilliant. It wasn't, or at least not original. A huge crowd was already there waiting by the time they turned the corner, arms linked. Many times, he suggested just giving up and leaving, but Santana was having none of that. He was doing this if it killed her. She made them stand with the fangirls, Kurt nervously wringing his hands as the screams get louder. He's here, it's now or never.
It actually wasn't now, it was 45 minutes later, when he had gotten to every fan that waited. Blaine had found Kurt seconds after he entered the streets through the back stage door. So, Kurt waited, leaning against the wall in the dark with his friend. Even running on three hours of sleep and one meal, Santana managed to come up with endless jokes about Blaine's still existing lack of height, as well as his now gel free mane of curls.
"Hey," Blaine strode up to them, hands in his pockets. The area was gradually becoming clear of fans, leaving the three of them alone in front of the bus.
"I'll go bring the car around." Santana announced, reaching out her arms for the two already standing boys to pull her off the ground. Now it was just the two of theme.
"Hey." Blaine said again.
"Hi." Kurt was both breathless and speechless, all of his previous words escaping him. Santana helped him practice his angry rant, Rachel found the perfect song for him to sing for forgiveness and plead his return, Finn said he should refer Blaine to the wrath of Burt. But, facing those hazel eyes, Kurt had nothing. "The show was...amazing. It's been a while since I've seen you perform, and never has been like that. I really liked your closing number, the last one before the encore."
Blaine wanted to say, I wrote it for you, that was the truth. Instead he settled with, "Oh, thanks.", looking at the ground. He was excited Kurt liked the song, but the tension between them was too much. Blaine couldn't take the way those blue eyes were avoiding his own. And when they did meet, it was for Kurt to look upon Blaine as a stranger. Kurt was still heartbroken, Blaine could tell, but he didn't know how to fix it. He looked around, making sure no more fans were lurking, before he spoke, "does she ask about me?" Maybe this was a start.
"HE never met you." Kurt retorted. Blaine's face fell, the answer not being what he wanted to hear. "Can we talk?" Kurt asked, nodding towards the curb.
"Sure, yeah." Blaine followed his lead, sitting on the edge of the sidewalk, feet in the road in front of the bus.
"So," Kurt began, awkwardly. "I assume you're doing well, with the summer tour and everything. I know it was always a dream for you."
Blaine shook his head yes, "it's been a crazy ride. Really it's amazing!" He grinned, just the thought of the past few months was enough to slap an ear to ear genuine smile on his face. Kurt missed that Blaine, the happy "dreams do come true" Blaine. The smile, however, faded quickly. "And how are you doing? Still have the apartment?" Before Blaine had left, he and Kurt had just moved in to a new apartment. It was their first place with just the two of them, no friends or extra roommates, and it soon would've been the three of them. The boys spent all of their free time, between Kurt's auditions and Blaine's gigs, decorating it. It had to be perfect; a kitchen, which Kurt was ready to use to death, a small master bedroom, a guest room, mainly for Rachel and decorated with her help. Plus the perfect little room, with pale yellow walls. The walls were as far as they got, they didn't know enough yet to continue.
"Actually, no. We moved." Kurt sounded ashamed, not even looking at Blaine as he admitted this. "The rent was to much for me to handle alone, on top of everything else. We live with Santana and Rachel, again. Now also Finn, they're engaged." Blaine tried not to be upset over not getting invited to the wedding. He's been on the rode for a while, maybe it's waiting at home for him. "It's ridiculously crowded in there." Kurt forced a chuckle, an attempted to make light of his situation. Blaine could tell he was hurting still.
"Kurt, I am so sorry."
"No." Kurt commanded. He sounded serious and powerful, it scared Blaine a little, making him jump. "No more apologies. I said some things, and you know I'm sorry. You've said and done some things, and I know you're sorry. We're past it now."
"Wait," Blaine tried to ignore the emphasis on and difference in the accusations, bit he couldn't. "Why have you only said things, while I've also done things?"
"Past it." Kurt snapped. Some things never change. He's still snappy when he doesn't get his way.
The uncomfortable silence, which fell over them for a while, was broken by a car driving past. The windows were rolled down, the radio blasting Blaine's voice.
"We love you, Blaine Anderson!" Was screamed from girls hanging out the windows of the backseats.
Blaine smiled and waved, "love you guys!" He shouted back.
"Let me have your babies!!" The last line shouted from the car as it turned the corner, out of sight, made Kurt scoff. The irony of it was just grand, Blaine would have to be stupid not to know what was coming next.
"Well, if you must know what you did, I suppose I could tell you. Then you can pass it along to your ovary bursting hormonal fans." Kurt seethed. "You left us."
Blaine rolled his eyes, if he wants a fight, then fine. "You were being unreasonable," Kurt made a noise, as if he felt greatly insulted. "and I was upset about it. So, my reaction was to be even more unreasonable."
"Mission accomplished." Kurt raised his voice, clapping slowly. "You left us and you never came back."
"Who is us? I left you, Kurt, just you." Blaine shouted. He was getting in Kurt's business, jabbing his fingers into the other man's chest for emphasis.
Kurt had to swat his finger away, "Rachel was pregnant with our child. Blaine, you left him without-"
"Without what, Kurt? Without a father?" Kurt nodded. "He had one, he had you!"
"He could've had you, too!"
"I never would've really been his dad. You were the biological and legal father. The school would call you, only you could see him immediatly in the hospital. I wouldn't really be a part of his life in a way that mattered."
"So, you chose not being a part of his life at all over that? And you know that wouldn't have happened, he would've loved just as much as me." Kurt's voice was softening and slowing down, telling anyone who knew Kurt to get ready for the water works.
Blaine, still sympathetic to the emotions of his ex, lightened up a little. His features relaxed and his voice was a little below its usual volume, "I think we both know that's not true. I would just be dad's boyfriend, because that's what we were, Kurt. We were just boyfriends and boyfriends break up. Sorry." Blaine shrugged, before rising to get on his bus.
The tears came. It was as if someone had opened a flood gate, the salty drops rushing from his eyes. "Blaine, we were more than boyfriends. We were best friends and lovers and soulmates and the best part of each other's day. Tell me you don't remember that. Tell me I'm wrong." He cried. "Because I'm not."
Turning back around, Kurt saw the tears in Blaine's eyes, too. "If you're so right, then why didn't you marry me?"
"Don't. Please, we've had this discussion." Kurt said.
"No, we didn't 'discuss' anything!" Blaine was raising his voice again, "you talked and I listened!" His anger was burning through his tears, all of the regrets from over the years being taken out on Kurt.
"No, I talked and you stormed out!" Kurt's words knocked Blaine down a peg. He knew it was true, and he was blown away that Kurt would bring it up. He really underestimated this man's rage. "Maybe, it would've helped if you had, I don't know, proposed!"
"I did!" Blaine screamed back. His face was red, Kurt's was too, his lips forced into a line of anger and his eyes squinted, eyebrows furrowed. The band on the bus could without a doubt hear them, but in the moment they didn't care.
"Yeah, ten years ago! You had just finished high school, I was in college. I wasn't about to let us try and pull a Finchel!"
Blaine let out an irritated huff, turning back to his bus, ready to leave. Hand poised over the door, he turned again. His words came out a whisper, "what happened to the Kurt I fell in love with? You loved planning weddings; I saw the scrapbooks, stacks of bridal magazines, pictures of Burt and Carole's wedding. I fell in love with 'if that's an engament ring, my answers yes' with 'Come What May should be our wedding song'. You didn't say anything against Finn and-"
"Stop." Kurt's taken a lot more command since last they had been together, Blaine noticed. "You know why I didn't want to get married."
"Okay, I am all for a fully legalized America. But, you live in New York. You can get married in New York, we can. I think it's sweet and strong and laudable that you want to wait until we could get married in any state, but as much as I hate to admit it, we might die waiting around for Texas to legalize."
"Didn't you love me enough to just be with me and know that I only wanted to be with you. Did you not love me enough to know that when the time came I would marry you in an instant?"
"I do love you that much," both boys were taken aback by the present tense, but Blaine continued. "But we need the benefits of marriage."
"All you wanted was the benefits?"
"All I want is you and a ring and both of our names on the adoption papers, so everyone knows that child is ours. That we loved each other enough to bring another human of our own into the world. Is that too much to ask?" Blaine defended his motifs. Kurt just shook his head slowly, thinking, trying to form the words. An experience in college made him realize he wanted to wait until everyone was as lucky as him and had the rights to marry who they want, wherever they want. But, he had wanted to have a kid with Blaine, not his own kid that Blaine helped raise. While he was thinking, Blaine asked his own question. "Why did you come here?"
"To see the show." Kurt answered, feeling a little less confident in the truth after their conversation.
"Why did you wait outside for me?" Blaine demanded.
"I want you to meet him, Toronto. Come spend the rest of summer with us, we can make room for you." Kurt pleaded.
"No," Blaine started.
"Please, you have always been his papa, even if you don't think so and he doesn't know you. I don't care what blood tests and adoption papers say, he's yours too."
"I can't. I only have three days in New York."
"But, the tour is over."
"Yeah, and now we head home."
"Where's home?"
"California." Blaine answered, almost as an apology. Kurt just formed an "oh" with his mouth. "If I stayed, it would just confuse him, anyways."
"No, I know my son. He's ready to meet you."
"I'm sorry, Kurt." Blaine said, before finally getting on the bus.
Kurt walked back to the car, somberly. He found Santana sitting on the Audii's hood. "Good job bringing the car around." He grumbled.
"Good job not giving me the keys." She retorted. Kurt reached into his pocket and threw them at her. "Thank you, let's get home before Toronto catches Berry's infectious obnoxiousness or Frankenteen's dance skills, I.e. nothing." The two rode home in silence and traffic.
