17. Make someone’s day

It took almost three hours for Blaine to convince Kurt that he should share the list. Finally, begrudgingly, Kurt agreed to meet Blaine for coffee the next morning so he could hand it over.

“You really don’t have to do this,” Kurt protested one more time, “and it’s not like you can help with half these things.”

“Oh ye of little faith,” Blaine tutted. Kurt could hear the smirk that was undoubtedly playing on Blaine’s lips. “Just be there tomorrow.”

“Yeah, yeah. Bye Blaine.”

“See ya.”Kurt pressed ‘end call’ on his cell and dropped it beside him on his bed. What the hell was he doing?

The next morning at 10:15 Kurt gave himself one last look-over in the full length mirror by his front door before reading over the list in his hand. He sighed, ripped the top off of the paper, and exited the apartment, shoving the paper in his pocket once more. The walk to the coffee shop was normally quick, but Kurt found himself stopping and starting, trying to turn back and then deciding there was no point. By the time he got to the place it was 10:40 and Blaine was sitting at a small table out front, giant grin firmly in place.

“Good morning, Kurt Hummel,” Blaine said, rising from his seat to great Kurt. “Coffee?” Blaine gestured towards the table where two cups sat waiting. Kurt quirked his eyebrow and sat, eyeing the coffee. “It’s not poisoned or anything,” Blaine offered, re-taking his seat. Kurt reached out and tentatively sipped at the hot drink, closing his eyes as the coffee hit his taste buds. Blaine smirked again.

“How did you know what kind of coffee I like?” Kurt questioned once he’d finished a very long gulp.

“I guessed. Now hand it over.” Kurt stared for a moment, still not believing he was doing this. He removed the paper, smoothed it out on the table top, and slid it over.

“It’s ripped,” Blaine noted, not breaking Kurt’s gaze.

“You’re a real Sherlock, you are,” Kurt quipped. “I never said you would get the whole list. You have to earn #1.”

“Fair enough, fair enough,” Blaine nodded, now examining the list. He read them softly, as if he were unaware that he was speaking aloud. He scrutinized the list for a few minutes before looking up at Kurt once more, grinning as always. “Okay then. I already know how I’m going to do a few of these.”

“Oh really?” Kurt was awestruck that Blaine was really doing this. “I still don’t understand.”

“Don’t understand what?”

“Why you’re doing this?”

“Call me a philanthropist. Now, what say we start right now?” Kurt really hated that damn smirk.

“And how are we going to do that?”

“Number 17,” Blaine said, matter-of-fact tone to his voice. Kurt thought for a moment, running over the list in his head.

“Number 17; make someone’s day?”

“Are you asking or telling?”

“Telling you what the item is, asking how you plan on doing that right now.”

“Go out with me.” Well, Kurt certainly wasn’t expecting that answer.

“Excuse me?” Blaine took a sip of his coffee before he replied.

“Go out with me. It would positively make my day, Kurt Hummel, if you would go out with me tonight. Dinner, maybe a little dancing.” Kurt stared.

This was definitely not happening. Maybe he was in a coma and this whole thing was some weird coma dream, brought on by morphine and psycho-hallucinogenic drugs.

“I’m going to take your silence as a yes,” Blaine said, uncapping a pen and crossing off number 17. “I’ll text you the address later. For now, I have to get to work,” Blaine finished off his coffee and stood, giving Kurt one last smile before striding off in the general direction of the book store.

Kurt sat at the coffee shop, sipping at his coffee and trying to figure out what exactly was going on. There was no way someone as attractive, and interesting, and incredible as Blaine not only wanted to go out with him but practically forced Kurt to say yes. Hell, Blaine hadn’t merely asked Kurt out, Blaine was full-on pursuing him. There was no way. Something was going on. It was some sort of major cosmic joke, it must have been. Or maybe one of Kurt’s friends had put Blaine up to this.

That was it. It must have been. Rachel, knowing how down Kurt had been since graduation, found Blaine at the bookstore and paid him off to ask Kurt out – after all it had been Rachel’s idea for Kurt to head to that particular bookstore the day before.

”how much is she paying you?” Kurt typed, hesitating only momentarily before texting Blaine.

”While flattered, I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Blaine protested.

”How much did you pay him?” Kurt typed again, this time sending the message to his roommate-slash-best friend.

”Who am I paying? And what am I paying him for?”

”Seriously guys, this isn’t funny. I mean, ha ha, I get it, Kurt needs a pick me up let’s pay for him to get a date,” Kurt texted both Rachel and Blaine. Maybe if they knew that he was on to both of them they would stop trying to cover it up.

”You’re kind of cute when you’re paranoid and insecure,” came Blaine’s reply, followed shortly thereafter by Rachel’s.

”You have a date?? And who is that other number?

”Blaine Anderson, nice to meet you. And yes, Kurt has a date. Tonight. With me.” Kurt groaned as he watched Blaine and Rachel exchange texts. As much as he loved being able to have conversations with multiple friends at once at the moment he kind of wished he couldn’t. As Rachel and Blaine continued exchanging short notes back and forth – mostly about Kurt, and a bit about Blaine – Kurt ran back to the apartment, determined to stop Rachel.

”speak of the devil! Kurt’s home!” Kurt’s phone buzzed. He glared at Rachel. ”uh oh. Gotta go.
