The only problem? Sebastian. It was almost like he could read Blaine's mind, which meant that he would probably be incredibly suspicious if Blaine glanced at his phone every 5 seconds and jumped 3 feet in the air when it buzzed.
With a sigh of defeat, Blaine pocketed his phone and left his bedroom. It had been about 27 minutes since he texted Kurt, and he still hadn't gotten a reply.
19 minutes later, Blaine's phone buzzed. He was tidying up the apartment when it happened, and he wasn't really expecting it. He found himself incredibly grateful that Sebastian wasn't home yet.
Blaine collapsed on the couch and pulled out his phone:
Kurt Hummel (2:33): Hi! Sorry, just got out of class :) How are you?
Blaine stared at the phone for a little while, unsure whether to reply now or later or just simply forget it for a day. What was he supposed to do? Taking a deep breath and stared at the wall. Alright, enough time must have passed to make his reply look not too desperate.
Blaine Anderson (2:35): Don't worry about it! I'm fantastic, thanks for asking. And yourself?
Yeah, that seemed good enough. He read it over a few times and finally hit send, throwing his phone across the couch so he wouldn't pounce on it when it buzzed.
But it buzzed right away. And how could he really resist? So, like a mountain lion, he slowly crept over to the phone and reached for it, hesitantly. He didn't know why, but he didn't want to reply too quickly.
Kurt Hummel (2:37): I'm good. :)
Blaine panicked. What else was he supposed to say? He quickly glanced around as if the answer was floating in the air somewhere when his phone buzzed in his hands.
Kurt Hummel (2:39): In the mood for coffee?
Blaine let out a sigh of relief, relaxing into the couch with a small smile on his lips.
Blaine Anderson (2:40): I'm always in the mood for coffee :D
Kurt Hummel (2:41): Meet me at Starbucks in 5 :)?
Blaine Anderson (2:41): Sure :)
Blaine jumped up from the couch and ran to his room, quickly changing into the best outfit he could find. He had to look a lot better than he did the last time he saw Kurt. In his defense, he didn't know Kurt would be there, so how could he had planned a nice outfit?
He pulled a cardigan on as he hopped around the living room with one shoe on and the other dangling from his hand, trying to find a piece of paper so he could write Sebastian a note. When paper had been found a note had been written, he grabbed his keys and phone and left the apartment, accidentally slamming the door out of excitement.
Kurt was sitting at the same table in the Starbucks as they did before, and the second Blaine walked in, his eyes lit up. He ordered his coffee and went to sit opposite of Kurt.
“Hey there,” Blaine greeted him as he sat down.
“Hello yourself!” Kurt said, not even bothering to hide the fact that he was taking in Blaine's outfit. He nodded to himself as he sipped his coffee and Blaine smiled. He guessed this meant that his outfit looked nice? He hoped so.
“How've you been?” Blaine asked, crossing his legs and leaning back in the chair.
“Stressed out. I hate exam time... But I'm glad I have at least some time to myself so I can just relax. And I had to get out of my apartment. Being caught in there was giving me a headache...” Kurt sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“You need fresh air. Which means we probably shouldn't be sitting in Starbucks.” Blaine pointed out, his eyebrow raised. Kurt matched his expression with curiosity.
“Then what do you suggest we do?”
“Central Park is only a few blocks over.” Blaine smiled, sipping his coffee, paying attention so he wouldn't burn his tongue. “How about we go take a walk? It's beautiful outside and I wouldn't want to waste a perfectly good day inside.”
“Are you implying that this is a waste of time?” Kurt raised his eyebrow, but the small smile on his face indicated that he was joking. Or at least half joking.
“No! No, not at all!” Blaine sounded a little too defensive, his hand gripping his coffee a little tighter than it was before. Kurt's face softened and he laughed.
“Relax, Blaine. I was joking. Come on, let's go.” He grinned and stood up, grabbing Blaine's hand and all put pulling him out the door.
Once outside, Kurt released Blaine's hand and they continued to walk down the street. Blaine finally started to feel the coffee in his system, waking up his brain with every sip he took.
“So other than school, what do you do? Do you have a job?” Blaine asked, glancing over at Kurt.
“Nothing, yet... I've dropped off resume after resume and I can't seem to find a job. And I need one soon because I can't keep depending on Rachel to pay the rent. Rachel's my roommate, by the way... But I barely have any money to buy food, so how can I afford to keep up with the rent?” Kurt sighed and Blaine wanted to stop and hug him. But they just kept walking.
“I can... Well, maybe... There might be an opening at the music store.” Blaine said, narrowing his eyes as he thought. Yeah, they had to fire Jon last week for some reason that wasn't exactly that clear to him. “I mean, if you're interested, that is...”
Kurt's eyes went wide. “A-are you serious? I would be so incredibly grateful, Blaine! If I could get a job there, I would forever be at your service. I'd do anything.”
“I'll have to double check with the manager, but I'm positive if you send a resume over that I can get you a job.”
Just then, someone accidentally bumped into Blaine, who turned to apologize just as the other man was. He saw that TiMER on his wrist and shook his head. He bit his lip and kept walking alongside Kurt.
“Everyone has TiMERs around here...” Kurt said, his voice a lot softer than before. Possibly because he figured this must be a soft spot for Blaine.
“Yeah... Sebastian's been trying to convince me to get one.” Blaine said, his voice barely over a whisper.
“Sebastian?” Kurt asked, glancing over at Blaine as they crossed the street. Another block to go until Central Park.
“He's my... My boyfriend.” Blaine answered, his expression still pretty solemn. He kept thinking about how Sebastian was practically forcing him into getting a TiMER when he'd made it clear a thousand times that he didn't want one.
“Oh...” Kurt said with a small nod. “Why does he want you to get one so badly?” He asked after a few moments of silence. Blaine shrugged and they found a bench in the shade to sit down on.
“I guess he wants to know if I'm his 'one'. It's ridiculous. People get this thought that they can't go on in life without knowing who they're meant to be with. It's taken over his mind. Every single conversation we have, no matter which subject, always ends with him trying to get me to get a TiMER. But I've already told him that I'm not getting one. No matter what.” Blaine explained, trying to keep the story as short as possible.
“I agree. It is ridiculous... Ever since they first introduced the idea, I knew people would become too obsessed with it. It's why I was so relieved to see you without a TiMER. It's a nice break, you know? Like everyone I've met in the city so far has one, and they're constantly nagging me about how I should get one. Even my dad is telling me I should consider it...” Kurt sighed and leaned back into the bench. It seemed like they were both sort of in the same situation. Kind of.
There was a silence that settled between them. But it wasn't awkward. They sipped their coffees and just sat there, watching as people walked by. They started this game where they counted how many people without a TiMER walked by. Kurt counted 2, Blaine counted none.
The rest of their conversations were simple things. They learned quite a lot about each other. Blaine never went to university, but really wanted to start studying music at NYU next fall. Kurt lived with his roommate, Rachel, and her “soulmate” Finn. They talked about Glee clubs and Broadway, and they agreed to go see a show together sometime.
Before they knew it, the sun was starting to set.
“I really should go back to the apartment now...” Blaine sighed, his hands in his pockets as they walked around the Park.
“So should I...” Kurt frowned a little.
“Same time tomorrow?” Blaine asked. He stopped walking to turn and look over at Kurt with a hopeful smile.
“Same time tomorrow.” Kurt nodded. They stood facing each other awkwardly before Kurt took a step forward and pulled Blaine into a hug, which he hesitated for a bit before returning.
“Thank you. For being the only one in my life right now that understands.” Kurt said after they'd separated, hoping that Blaine would know what he meant. Blaine did.
“Thank you, too, for understanding.” Blaine smiled. And with that, they parted ways.
After a few steps, Blaine turned around and watched Kurt walk away, his body nothing but a silhouette against the setting sun. He smiled to himself before turning around and heading home, feeling a thousand times lighter than he had that morning.
