Kurt and Blaine then found themselves in the forest where Blaine had delivered his vows. Kurt sighed wistfully, taking in his surroundings, breathing in deeply.
“I spent so long in the darkness; I’d almost forgotten how beautiful the moonlight is.” Kurt sighed, he let go of Blaine’s hand to walk-almost dance- around the forest. Blaine watched him as he did. It felt weird for him to admit it to himself, because Kurt was dead, but Kurt was very beautiful in a very carefree way. Blaine looked at his shoes again as he was struck with a familiar guilt.
Meanwhile, Kurt was so busy looking at the moon and travelling around the forest, he didn’t notice a raised root of a tree. He tripped, one of his legs snapping off at the knee. “Psst, I think you dropped something.” The maggot hinted. Kurt stood back up awkwardly and reattached his leg. He caught Blaine’s eye as he disappeared behind a tree, and swung around on it humming lightly.
“Hold on, Hold on.” Blaine took Kurt’s hands and sat him down on a tree stump. “I think I should prepare mother and father for the big news. I’ll go ahead and you…wait here.”
“Perfect” Kurt sighed happily. It saddened Blaine to lie to him. He felt like he shouldn’t, because of how honest and trusting Kurt was.
“I-I won’t be long.” Blaine stammered. “Stay here I’ll be right back.”
Kurt closed his eyes “Okay.” He sighed.
“No peeking.” Blaine teased lightly, Kurt giggled. Blaine felt warm at the sound, but he remembered Rachel and his father and remembered why he was here. He turned and ran away as quietly as he could.
A while later, Kurt was still sitting in the forest, drawing figures in the snow at his feet with a stick. “This is your conscious speaking, listen to what I say. I have a bad feeling about that boy.” Kurt pulled the maggot from his coat pocket.
“Go chew on someone else for a while. Blaine has gone to see his parents, just as he said.” Kurt replied.
“You know, if I hadn’t been in it last night, I would say you’ve lost your mind.” The maggot replied.
Kurt sighed shortly. “I’m sure he has a perfectly good reason for taking so long.”
“I’m sure he does. Why don’t you ask him?” The maggot reasoned.
“Alright I will.” Kurt said determinedly, standing up.
“After all, he couldn’t have gotten far, with those cold feet.” The maggot chuckled motioning to the footprints with his head.
Blaine climbed up the vine outside Rachel’s balcony. He stumbled onto the balcony, falling onto the cold stone.
Rachel looked up from her sewing at the noise and made her way quickly to the window. She opened the doors quickly and Blaine ran in, closing the door tightly behind him. He took a deep, relieved breath. “Blaine?!”
“Rachel!” He flung himself into her arms.
“Come by the fire! Where have you been? Are you alright?” Rachel asked concerned. “What’s all this about a mystery man?”
“I-I…” Blaine stammered shaking slightly.
“You’re as cold as death.” Rachel remarked. “What’s happened to you?”
“Rachel, I confess. This morning, I was terrified of marriage. But you’re my best friend and I never want to be without you and maybe, that the marriage wouldn’t be that bad, because it’d be with you.” Blaine sighed tiredly.
“Blaine I feel the same, but what’s all this about a mystery man?”
“Rachel-I, I was in the woods and I was rehearsing my vows and I-“Blaine broke off at the sight of a figure climbing onto the balcony. “Rachel, I-“the door rattled. “I seem to have found myself married. And you should know it’s unexpected.”
“Blaine, my darling, I just wanted to meet-“ Kurt looked at who Blaine was with, Blaine stood between the two of them. Kurt reached his side and wrapped a hand around his arm. “Darling, who’s this?”
“Who is he…?” Rachel asked, stunned.
“I’m his husband.” Kurt let go of Blaine’s arm and showed off the ring on his skeletal finger.
Rachel looked at the ring, and then at Blaine with wide, shocked eyes. “Blaine?”
“Rachel, you don’t understand,” Blaine reasoned with his best friend, before she flew off the handle. He shook Kurt’s arm, the bones rattled together “He’s dead, see?”
Kurt freed his arm from Blaine’s hand and looked Blaine in the eye angrily “Hopscotch.” He said shortly. Blaine felt an invisible force pulling him back.
“Blaine!” Rachel cried as she tried to grab his hand, but it was no use, they were gone.
Upon returned to the Land of the Dead. Kurt pushed Blaine away from him tearily.
“You lied to me! Just to get back to that other woman!” Kurt raised his voice angrily.
“Kurt, you don’t understand! You’re the other person.” Blaine explained frantically.
“But you’re married to me. She’s the other woman.” Kurt cried, tears streaming down his cheeks.
“He’s right you know.” Miss Sylvester pointed out.
Kurt continued to cry wordlessly while Blaine stood by, not knowing what to do part of him wanting to comfort Kurt, while the other part wanted nothing more than to wake up from this nightmare and face marrying Rachel head-on with no complaints.
“And I thought…I thought this was all going so well.” Kurt sobbed.
Blaine stepped forward. “Look, I’m sorry but this just can’t work.”
“Why not?” Kurt asked desperately.
“Kurt, it just can’t. Yes, I am homosexual but, I need to marry Rachel for the good of my mother and father.” Blaine sighed sadly. “Listen, under different circumstances, who knows? But we’re just too different. I mean, you’re dead.”
“You should have thought about that before you asked me to marry you.” Kurt choked out.
Blaine sighed exasperatedly “Why can’t you understand? It was a mistake! I’d never marry you!” As soon as the phrase left his mouth, Blaine regretted it because it was rude, and untrue. “Kurt-“
Kurt didn’t listen any longer, he sighed sadly with tears falling down his cheeks and left Miss Sylvester’s office.
