"I came to talk to you about this," Blaines mother held open a torn envelope. It looked like it had been mailed and Blaine stared at it quizzically. What was this about?
"I dont even know what that is," Blaine stated. His eyes shifted to Kurt, whos face had gone pale white. Did Kurt know something that he didnt?
"Oh, you dont?" Pam said harshly, her eyes narrowing. She slammed the envelope on the kitchen table. "Because Im sure you sent it."
A loud clatter caused Blaine, Pam, and Rachel to turn to look in Kurts direction. He dropped the bowl in his hand and quickly bent down to pick it up, muttering an apology. Blaine eyed him suspiciously. Why was he acting so nervous?
"Look, whatever that is, I didnt send it," Blaine turned back to his mother. "What is going on?
Pulling out the contents, Pam said, "So this doesnt look familiar?"
At this, Blaines mouth went dry. The blue invitation was very familiar to him but he definitely didnt put it in an envelope addressed to his parents. "How did you get that?" he asked, his eyes shifting back to Kurt. It had to be Kurt, because no one else mailed the invitations.
"How did I get it? It came in the mail!" Pam barked, rising from her chair. "It damn near caused a riot in the house."
Turning on his fiancé, Blaine said, "You invited my parents after I told you that I didnt want this?"
"I thought if they said yes itd make things better for you. What was I supposed to do? Youve been miserable over this and I hate seeing you in pain," Kurt defended himself. Slamming the bowl on the counter, Kurt added, "I didnt expect your mom to show up here. I thought shed send a reply. And if they said no, I was going to throw it away and just forget it. You wouldnt have gotten hurt."
"Are you alone?" Blaine asked, fearing how much worse this would get if his father was here too.
"Yes," Pam choked out. Tears formed in her eyes, and she explained, "We had a really big fight, Blaine. I told him I couldnt miss my sons wedding and he..." she stopped, bowing her head.
"He what?" Blaine prompted, crossing his arms over his chest.
Rolling up her sleeve, Pam showed him the fingerprint sized bruises around her left wrist. "He grabbed me and shoved me into the wall. He started screaming at me and said that if I so much as spoke to you I would be out the door."
"Mom," Blaine said. He couldnt believe what he was hearing.
"Youre my baby, and although Ive obeyed your father from day one, I knew I couldnt turn on you for a man that threatened me," Pam said, pulling her sleeve back over her wrist nervously. "So I left and as I walked out the door, he screamed that we were through and hed be in touch by the next day to file for divorce."
Staring at her for a long, hard moment, Blaines chest felt tight. He couldnt move until he felt Rachels gentle hand on his arm. "Youre... Youre getting a d-divorce," he choked out.
"He called me this morning," Pam started. "I would have come here yesterday but I wasnt ready to face you yet. When he asked me today if I was really coming here, I told him yes, and he said that was my final answer, and he was definitely done."
"Mom, you cant get a divorce because you want to come to my wedding," Blaine told her, stepping forward. This was more than Blaine had expected. "I didnt even invite you to the wedding. Kurt did."
"You... you dont want me to come to your wedding?" Pam asked, her lip quivering.
Taking a deep breath, Blaine said, "You should have stuck up for me from the beginning. You never should have turned your back on me the night I came out. You could have defended me but you were too caught up in your own pride to do that."
"Its not that simple," Pam shook her head.
"You hurt me, mom," Blaines voice cracked. "You really hurt me. How do you think it feels to have your parent chuck you aside like you dont matter?"
"Blaine, you have no idea what your fathers been like," Pam insisted. "If you really knew."
"Of course I do!" Blaine scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest. "I have dealt with this for years. Sending me to Dalton the moment something bad happened in public school. No, excuse me, you and dad referred to me getting the shit beaten out of me as me causing drama. You never took the time to learn why it even happened. You just sent me to Dalton Academy."
"You loved Dalton," Pam shot back.
"Youre right. I did. But it wasnt my first choice. I didnt get a choice. And even though I told you the work was harder, you still expected perfect grades," Blaine continued. His heart pounding quickly in his chest.
"Doesnt every parent want their child to succeed?" Pam was still defending herself and it made Blaine feel anger building in his blood.
"But then Cooper got kicked out because he wasnt making good choices and you still havent spoken to him," Blaine said, balling his hands into fists. "And then you and dad pushed to make sure that I didnt make bad choices. Medical school was the only option, and I could only apply to the best schools. Dad was so disappointed when I ended up at NYU over Yale. How could his son not get into Yale?"
"Blaine," Pam stated.
"If you had just listened to what I wanted, you would know that I wanted to pursue music, not medicine. But music was a bad choice like Coopers acting, so I ended up at medical school. Even then my choices werent perfect. I ended up dating that theater girl. He pointed at Rachel, who cringed. "And we know how you feel about actors."
"It was nothing personal. She was a nice girl. It was just her career choice," Pam said sympathetically to Rachel. "We wanted our grandchildren to have a stable home."
"And you made damn sure that she knew it too," Blaine jabbed a finger at her. His temper rising still. "Just like you had to make a big deal about Kurt. In front of him. But Im telling you now that Im not backing down this time. Im not a frightened little boy anymore. I love Kurt. I love him. Were getting married, and hes adopting Rachels baby, and we dont need you or dad to stand in our way."
"Youre adopting the baby?" Pam gaped at Kurt with wide eyes.
"I-I... I..." Kurt stuttered.
"Its not really your business. I dont know what brought you here today, because youve been by dads side through everything," Blaine told her. "But dont bother looking for answers, because you dont deserve them." With That, Blaine stormed toward the front door and grabbed his jacket.
"Blaine!" Kurts voice called closely behind. He grabbed Blaines arm and said, "Lets just sit down and talk about this rationally. Please dont do this."
Cocking an eyebrow, Blaine jerked his arm out of Kurts grasp and said, "I have nothing to say to you at the moment. This is all your fault in the first place." He slammed the front door behind him and headed out into the crisp air outside.
After staying with Sam for the remainder of the evening, Blaine went home to a quiet apartment. His bed was empty, which meant Kurt had climbed into bed with Rachel again, avoiding Blaine. And Blaine wasnt sure how he felt about that, because he hated upsetting Kurt but Blaine was still angry with him.
The next morning, he trudged into the kitchen and found Rachel eating a banana. "Morning," she mumbled. Finishing her last bite, she watched him closely.
"Hi. How are you?" Blaine asked, heading toward the coffee pot.
"My back is killing me. Shes making it really difficult to sleep at night," Rachel admitted, placing a hand on her belly. "What about you? Are you okay?"
"Fine... Um, wheres Kurt?" he glanced around nervously. Blaine wasnt sure he was ready to face him yet. It was too soon.
"He decided to head out early for work. My guess is that hes avoiding you," she winced, confirming what he already knew.
"Did he say anything to you last night?" Blaine asked nervously. He had dreaded the moment he had to face Kurt, because he was afraid of what he might say to him. He was afraid of how much he had actually hurt Kurt, how much damage this caused.
Rachel shrugged. Climbing out of her chair, she waddled to the trash can and threw her peel away. Biting her lip, she said, "I know he was upset. He just said he wanted to help you and he didnt know how. He was hoping he could do some good here."
"But he lied to me. He went against something he knew I didnt want," Blaine said bitterly.
Stepping in front of him, Rachel placed her hands on his hips and said, "Dont we sometimes lie to protect the ones we love?"
He stared into Rachels brown eyes. They were full of concern. Blaine thought of the lies he had told her to avoid hurting her or the baby. Blaine knew she had been vulnerable during her first trimester and he tried so hard to hide Kurt from her. "Im really sorry for all the pain Ive caused you, Rachel," he whispered, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
"I know you are," Rachel said quietly. Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Weve had a few bumps in the road, havent we?" Blaine asked, he wiped a tear from her cheek..
"This is our biggest bump," Rachel replied, her hands caressing her large, rounded stomach.
"Im really sorry about this... " Blaine cupped her cheek. He hadnt properly spoken to her about this since they made the decision. "You know you didnt have to give her up. I cant imagine how hard this is for you."
"It was the right thing to do. Sometimes the right thing to do isnt the easy thing to do, Rachel said quietly. "Just like you know letting your mom come to the wedding isnt easy but its right. She is your mom. You should hear what she has to say."
"I cant set myself up for more heartbreak," he told her.
Rachel smiled softly, "After my collapse, I thought the same thing. But then I found myself facing Kurt, and even though it killed me to do it, it was something I had to do."
"So you think I should talk to my mom?" Blaine asked.
"She flew here to beg for your forgiveness. I dont really know how you can turn that down," Rachel said. "But to fully forgive your mom, I think you need to forgive Kurt too."
Blaine and Kurt missed each other that evening, and Kurt was gone to work again by the time Blaine had woken up. Blaine was getting a little worried by Kurts silence. Yes, he was upset with him, but he couldnt lose Kurt over it.
When Kurt trudged through the door later that day, Blaine stood up and greeted him, "Hi."
"Hi," Kurt frowned, setting a bag on the coffee table harshly.
"We need to talk," Blaine shifted uncomfortably.
"Okay, talk," Kurt shrugged, moving into the bedroom and Blaine followed him.
"Why did you do it?" Blaine asked quietly, stepping toward Kurt. "I mean, you knew how i felt about my parents and you did it anyway."
Sighing, Kurt stopped in front of the dresser and said, "I couldnt let it go." He held up his hand when Blaine opened his mouth and cut him off, "I knew you were going to be angry but I had such high hope that I could help you and I knew it was worth risking that."
"Sending an invitation to my gay wedding wasnt going to change their minds. Nothing could ever convince my dad that being gay is okay. Its not. At all. You must have known this wouldnt convince them," Blaine said bitterly.
"Them? Blaine, your mom came here because she wanted to come to the wedding," Kurt reminded him.
Running a hand through his curly hair, Blaine shot back, "Yeah and now my parents are getting a divorce, and its all my fault."
"You dont honestly think theyre divorcing just because of you. Michael is a tough man. Im sure the strain has been there for years," Kurt raised an eyebrow. "If you would listen to your mom, you would understand."
"And what? Hear her tell me how sorry she is because she now realizes she messed up," Blaine cried. He had spent the last two days shoving his emotions down his throat but having Kurt defend his mom resurfaced everything. "I needed her long before this. I needed her around when I was really struggling and she was never there for me."
"People make mistakes," Kurt defended her. "You forgave Cooper for not always being there for you."
"Siblings are different. This is my mom, Kurt. Dont you understand? It was like she wasnt around at all, because she was too damn worried about spending her time as my dads arm candy. It was like I had to spend my difficult teenage years without a mom. You dont know what its been like," Blaine said hotly.
Freezing, Kurts icy blue eyes burned through him. "No, Blaine, I would have no idea what that feels like," he said coldly.
As Kurt turned to walk away, Blaine grabbed his arm and said, "Kurt, no thats - thats not what I meant. I know you didnt have your mom but I at least had a chance with my mom and she didnt care."
"But she does care. She didnt know how to show it," Kurt protested. "Blaine, I told you before that I would give anything for my mom to be at my wedding, but I have to accept that its impossible. Your mom is begging you to be a part of your wedding and youre shutting her out. Its a two way street."
"I stood in the middle of that street for a long time, and she waited until I got run over to come find me," Blaine shook his head. "I cant forgive her for that."
Slamming a hand on the dresser in frustration, Kurt said, "But at least shes there now. Isnt it better that she comes at all?"
"She wouldnt have even considered coming if you hadnt sent that damn invitation!" Blaine offered. "If she wanted this relationship, she would have stuck up for me when my dad threw that glass at me."
Slumping his shoulders, Kurt bowed his head. Taking a deep breath, he said, "Blaine, honey, I dont think its been that simple for your mom. Just hearing what your dad did to her when he told her not to leave, I moms been stuck for a while."
"Are you suggesting that my dad abuses her?" Blaine fumed. He couldnt believe what he was hearing.
"I dont know!" Kurt shrugged. "Im just saying that it hasnt been easy for your mom to just stand up to him. You dont know what its been like for her. You have to listen and hear her side of the story."
"Kurt, you dont know my parents," Blaine explained. "Youve only spent a couple hours with them. You have no right to decide how my dad treats my mom. Any more than you had a right to send them that invitation."
Placing both hands on his shoulders, Kurt said, "I told you that I just wanted to help. I knew there was a chance this wasnt going to work but I hoped it would. Is it so wrong to hope for something good?"
"It is when its not your business," Blaine shoved his hands away. "I told you how I felt and you went against my wishes. Were supposed to be a team, Kurt. How am I supposed to trust you when you wont respect my wishes?"
"Because I made one mistake, youre not going to trust me anymore?" Kurt said, tears forming in his eyes.
"No, its the fact that you were willing to lie and hide this from me if they denied your invitation. You went against me with the intention that you may have to lie about it," Blaine took a step backward. Shaking his head, he said coldly, "i cant start a marriage on a lie
"Now youre saying you dont want to get married?" Kurt said quietly. The pain in his eyes was too much for Blaine and he had to look away.
After a long pause, Blaine quietly said, "I dont know, okay? I dont know. Maybe we are too young. Maybe we arent ready. I thought my parents would last and I broke them up. If I cant keep my parents together, how am I supposed to keep you, especially when you pull this?"
"Blaine," Kurt whispered.
Looking into those pained eyes, Blaine said the one thing he knew he was going to regret, "Im just really disappointed in you, Kurt. I thought you were the one person I could count on but I guess I was wrong," Blaine turned on his heel and quickly left the apartment.
"Im surprised to see you here," Pam Anderson said through the crack in the door to the hotel room.
"Can I come in?" Blaine said quietly. His stomach was in knots over what he was about to do.
Biting her lip, she slowly nodded. Closing the door to unbolt it, Pam swung it open to let her son in. She followed Blaine to a bed and sat down. "Whats up?" she asked shortly.
Hanging his head, Blaine told her, "Im not happy with you."
"You have every right to be angry," Pam nodded. "I understand that."
"You really hurt me and I cant get over that easily," Blaine continued, looking up into her eyes. "You should have tried harder."
"I know," Pam whispered. Blaine could almost see the regret in her expression and his stomach clenched in guilt.
"And I dont know how to handle you being here, because I wasnt going to invite you. Now that I know you responded positively, I dont know what to do, because I am so angry with you," he continued.
"If you dont want me to come, I will get on a plane and just go back to Ohio," she stood up and began pacing. "I shouldnt have just jumped on a plane and expected you to welcome me with open arms."
"Would you go back to him?" Blaine flinched, thinking about the bruises on her wrist.
"No," she said quietly. Rubbing her wrist, Pam said more firmly, "No, I cant. Your father has never done anything to physically hurt me. He crossed the line, and I wont go back to that."
"Well, thats somewhat reassuring," Blaine said.
Kneeling down in front of him, Pam took his hands and said, "Blaine, I love you. I know I havent been the greatest mother to you, and Im so very sorry. I should have done better."
"Yeah, you should have," Blaine replied bitterly. His hands were shaking and she squeezed them, watching him with concerned eyes.
"But your father held me back from so many things..." Pam took a deep breath. "Like you, my parents were strict. I grew up under the impression that I was to follow your father whole-heartedly. I followed him around like a lost puppy and I was never brave enough to stray from him."
"I noticed," Blaine mumbled. It was why he hated her mistakes so much.
"But then you came out and your dad lost his mind. When you left, he began tearing pictures off the wall, breaking things in your old bedroom, and yelling like crazy," Pam said, rubbing her thumb on the back of his hand.
A pain filled Blaines chest and his breath caught in his chest. "H-he did that?" Blaine asked.
"I tried talking some sense into him. He told me we were just going to act like you were never around and I told him I couldnt do that," she choked out. Tears in her eyes, she reached up and cupped his cheek.
Closing his eyes, Blaine shivered. He opened them again and said, "you stuck up for me?"
"Yes," she whispered.
Blaine was so conflicted. He felt relieved that she had finally come through for him, but it took over-stepping a line to do that. Did that mean her actions were sincere? Why did it take so long to leave after that night? Was she just using Blaine as an excuse to get out? Where did he start trusting her?
"Mom," he said, pulling her hand away from his face. "I dont know what to say."
Sighing, Pam said, "its too soon to make a decision. I know this is a lot for you to take in. You cant answer rationally without thinking it through... Go home and think about it."
"What about you?" Blaine asked.
"Im going to be here for a few days," Pam shook her head. "I need to figure out where Im going from here..." Standing up, she added, "Just think about it, okay?"
"Okay," he nodded, standing up. Pausing at the door, he gave himself one more thing to think about, "how do you honestly feel about Kurt?"
"I think hes a nice boy," Pam shrugged. "I dont know how I feel about your desires toward him but I want you happy, and if he makes you happy, theres nothing I can do."
"I see," Blaine replied.
"But dont doubt his judgement on inviting us. He brought me back here to you," Pam smiled weakly.
Rachel had said that Blaine had to forgive Kurt in order to forgive his mom, but after talking to both of them, it seemed like he had to forgive his mom to fully forgive Kurt. He didnt know what he could trust or where he had to go from here.
Blaine slowly nodded on his way out the door. He had decisions to make and he wasnt sure where to start.
