Thirty minutes had passed into Kurt's lunch period before he stopped crying. The hallways were deserted, but the only people in its prescience were Kurt and Burt, who were sitting on the floor, heads rested against the cool metal of the lockers.

"I don't understand," Kurt said, shaking his head. "Why would this happen?"

"I don't know," Burt said, still crying as hard as he did when he arrived.

"What are we going to tell Finn?" Kurt asked.

"We just have to tell him straight forward," Burt said, "it's the only way."

"I am so sorry, Dad," Kurt said, putting his arm around his father's shoulders.

"I can't do this anymore, Kurt," Burt said, bringing his head into his hands. "I loved her so much, and I thought we were finally going to a normal family again, son."

The hour passed by more quickly than expected. By the time Kurt had the courage to go to his Algebra class, Finn had already discovered that something was up by the way he was acting. In their study period, Finn approached him, hoping to get some help on his test that was coming up in the next period.

"Hey, Kurt!" Finn yelled after him.

Kurt turned around, and waited for Finn to approach him. When he finally caught up, Finn asked the question that had been pulling at him all day, "Are you okay, bro?"

"Finn, I think it would be best if you came with me," Kurt said.

"What's going on?" Finn asked, following Kurt down the hallway.

"My father has signed us out for the day," Kurt said, still not meeting eye contact with Finn.

"I can't," Finn said, "I have a really important test coming up."

"It's okay," Kurt said. "Dad talked to Ms. Lebowitz, and she completely understood."

"Understood, what?" Finn said, clueless as ever.

The car drive over to Hummel's Tires and Lube was the quietest the two boys had ever been. They had said not a word to each other, as Kurt drove his car there.

When they finally reached the parking lot, Kurt pulled his key out of the ignition and sat in the car for what seemed like hours before saying, "Finn, you have to remember that what is going to happen was not planned or expected."

Before Finn could ask what he meant, Kurt left the car and fled inside of the shop. Finn followed not too far behind as they entered through the cool office on the outside of the shop.

When Finn had reached the counter, the file worker, Lewis held his hand out and told Finn, "I am so sorry for your loss."

"What?" Finn asked.

Kurt pulled his hand into his father's office at the end of the hallway. When they had gotten inside, they found Burt at his desk, not working but crying. As he heard the door shut, he head shot up meeting Finn.

"What the hell is going on, Burt?" Finn practically yelled.

"It's Carole," he said. "She's gone."
